About Breanna

Does public speaking make you nauseous? Does the thought of writing a lengthy research paper make you want to hide in a cupboard? If I told you it does the same to me, I may not persuade you to hire me as your tutor. But for years, it did. And I learned how to work through these emotions, leap these idiosyncratic hurdles, and not only get by, but succeed. I've committed my life to research, writing, and speaking. I am a nationally ranked competitive speaker, a former debate and public speaking coach, and I have my master's degree in political theory with an emphasis in rhetoric, political economy, and public policy analysis.

After coaching the WWU Intercollegiate Debate Team from 11th to 7th ranking in the nation, I was offered a full ride to the University of Maryland to pursue a PhD in political science. I know my way around a library. Not only did I help manage the reference section of WWU's library, I've been hired Penn State law professors to do independent research at the National Archives of the US Supreme Court. I know how to help students succeed. While in grad school, I was recruited to mentor UMD honors students helping them prep for exams, polish presentations, edit research papers, and prepare for graduate school. I know how to write. From the beginning stages to the final edits, I love writing, and more importantly, I love helping others write. I draw on years of experience editing a world renown political economy journal - I've even helped my professors improve their own papers before sending them off for publication - and I've been fortunate enough to land a couple of my own pieces in print.

Despite my love for academics, I now reside, and continue to publish and write, on my family's farm in the Ozark Mountains of Southwest Missouri. Drawing on my extensive knowledge of biology and sustainable farming, my husband and I decided to trade in our fast-paced Washington DC lives in order to purchase the family farm and pursue our dream of owning a small business.

I love learning and love teaching even more. My expertise is in public speaking, politics, and government, but I have a keen understanding and have tutored in reading, writing, ESL, mathematics, biology, and statistics. Whatever your academic challenge, I'd love to meet you and see how we can work together so you can succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bodybuilding

I have been actively practicing weight-lifting for over 10 years. In college, I was on the women's rowing team and was required to strength train on my own time, in addition to taking university body-building courses. Outside of school, I have practiced both ballet and martial arts, both of which greatly influenced my posture and form. I have been recruited by a number of friends and colleagues to coach them in their strength training efforts and still practice on my own to this day.

Career Development

I have a diversity of experience in this field. First, when I was on the Leadership Board for the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Washington DC, I chaired the employment committee. I helped immigrants, transitioning workers, and entry level workers learn job skills, conduct work searches, perform mock interviews, and write resumes. At UMD-College Park, I was an honors student mentor. I advised students for internships, research projects, and resume writing. As an instructor at WWU and UMD, I wrote countless letters of recommendation for students seeking internships and career positions. I also sat on three different hiring committees. Moreover, I've worked as a professional editor and have done quite a bit of resume/cover letter freelance work for friends and colleagues.
