Southeast Missouri State University (Chemistry)
I graduated from Southeast Missouri State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry with a minor in mathematics. I have always had a love for both chemistry and math and I have always enjoyed showing others how to solve math problems. I love to see the light bulb light up when someone suddenly understands something they had been struggling with. I was a member of National Honor Society all through high school and maintained above a 3.5 GPA throughout college. During my time in high school I participated in the A+ program which gave me a chance to tutor other students who were struggling.
My general approach to tutoring is to give the students problems starting with an easy problem. I will explain the basics and see how they do when working the problem and find out the trouble spots. As they begin to understand more and more I will increase the difficulty of the problems and continue to watch for trouble areas. I also enjoy relating the subjects I am tutoring in with real life situations. Many people are under the impression they will not use any of the information in real life so I love when I am able to show them how it can help in day to day activities.
I have a math minor and I have completed coursework in College Algebra, Calculus 1 and 2, Linear Algebra and statistics. In addition to this many of the chemistry courses I have completed require an in depth knowledge of several different math functions.
My college degree is in Chemistry and I have worked for a chemical manufacturing company for 5 years now. I have worked in the area of both Quality Control and Quality Assurance. I have a great deal of both practical and theoretical knowledge.

Shawn was very kind, upbeat, easygoing and very diplomatic. A true math person - my son had a wonderful time working on his areas of difficulty. My son and I could not have asked for a better tutor. This was an excellent experience and we can't recommend Shawn highly enough.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
