About Hannah L

I have some experience in tutoring other students at my university, but most of my experience has come from tutoring my younger brother who is four years my junior. I love helping people understand and come to enjoy the subjects that I love. My greatest desire is for any student I tutor to pass their class with flying colors. I feel that every student should have a tutor, not because they struggle with a subject (although that is often the case), but because it helps the student to excel in the subject material, not merely scrape by in the class. I have had the occasional tutor myself, so I believe strongly in the good they can accomplish, and the benefits of having someone close to the student's age helping them to learn the material. Although my listed subjects are mainly in science, I will gladly help the student with any homework they have questions on to the best of my ability.
I am very friendly and easy to get to know. I do not ridicule students for having 'stupid' questions and will work with the student to come to the correct conclusion rather than giving the student the correct answer. I believe students do not properly learn a subject material until they can properly reason it out on their own. I will do my best to help and guide students as they complete their homework.

I am an outstanding science tutor because I am still in school. I have one more year left before I earn my B.S. in Biology, so all of the classes I tutor in are still fresh in my mind. I am very passionate about science and love to share my knowledge with others. I have completed a multitude of biology courses including Introductory Level Biology, Evolution, Microbiology, Genetics, Anatomy & Physiology, Gross Anatomy, and so many others. I have also completed two semesters of General Chemistry and two semesters of Organic Chemistry. I will be taking Biochemistry next semester to obtain a minor in Chemistry. I have a lot of experience in science and also do my own independent research, so I feel I am qualified to teach in any of these listed subjects and answer any questions the student has. If I do not immediately have the answer, I still have all of my textbooks and will find out.

I would love to be able to help you and will do my absolute best to answer your questions. Please contact me to learn more and find out how I can help you. Feel free to schedule a lesson in any of the listed subjects or send me an email if you would like to see if I can help in one that is not listed. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I am a published author and have tutored several students in preparation for the ACT

ACT Science

I am getting my BS in Biology in May of 2016.

Anatomy

I took Anatomy and Physiology as well as Gross Anatomy where I worked with a small group dissecting a cadaver in the interest of better understanding the human body.

Biology

I am currently in my senior year at Maryville University majoring in Biology. I have taken two semesters of General/Intro Biology, Genetics, Evolution, and multiple other upper level Biology courses.

Chemistry

I have taken and passed College-level General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry.

Elementary Math

I have passed high levels of math including College Algebra and Trig, Statistics, and Calculus

English

I am a published author and write juvenile fiction. I am also a Biology major so I have learned to write very good research papers. I have co-authored 3 research posters that were displayed at symposiums and the Botany Society of America (BSA) Conference. I am working on publishing my own research as well.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored several students who speak English as a second or third language before. I am a published author and help students with English, Grammar, Spelling, and Reading. I help with pronunciation of the English language during reading and speaking.

Grammar

I have tutored in Grammar multiple times in the past.

Public Speaking

I am qualified to teach this subject because I am a great public speaker. I am required to give presentations and present research in front of large groups and I took a speech class in high school to give me tips and skills to become a good speaker. I also took Speech and Debate. Both classes have helped me over the years. I can teach students how to overcome their nervousness, correct stuttering/ stumbling (if it is possible, I can do it), teach proper presentation skills (adding to the presentation vs. Reading off the PowerPoint slides), presence when presenting (can include posture, hand movements, correcting pacing/swaying/other unattractive movement), and speech patterns (mainly tempo. The presentation must be spoken slow enough to be understood, but not so slowly that the audience falls asleep). I have learned all this and more and would be more than willing to pass on my knowledge.

Reading

I am very good at reading out loud and have taught pronunciation before. I have helped teach my younger brothers and younger cousins to read and write as well as learn phonics.

Writing

I am a published juvenile fiction author and am very good at editing students' papers.

So helpful!

After just one session with Hannah, my daughter's anatomy grade improved exponentially! The fundamental knowledge she provided helped my daughter gain a better grasp on the subject. Something she wasn't getting in her high school classroom.
