I have been "doing" education since 1979. After graduating college, I started off as a 6th grade teacher, then I taught 4th grade. We home-schooled our four children off and on for nine years. When home-schooling, I used different curriculum to suit the needs and interests of my children. We used phonics and Literature. Social studies was especially interesting when we included library resources and field trips. The children were able to learn at their own pace, so it was a tutoring...
The children were able to learn at their own pace, so it was a tutoring experience.
Later, I began teaching again at a private K-12 school. There, I taught 2nd grade for one year. The next year I began developing an art curriculum for the school. This I taught for three years, K-12. It was so amazing to see the students grow in confidence and actually be able to accomplish more than they thought they could. I finished up at this school teaching 6th grade part time covering language arts and math.
Currently, I am an active substitute teacher in two school districts and two Charter Schools. Flexibility is a sub's motto, and so I am.
As a tutor, I would interview to find out expectations. I would decide if the student needs extra help with their current school curriculum and see what can be used to strengthen and support their learning. If extra curriculum is needed outside of my resources then it would be at the parent/guardian's expense.
We would set up a schedule and start meeting. When the child shows improvement and/or satisfactory results are demonstrated another review can be done to see what the next steps should be.
