About Lisa

My name is Lisa. I am a Licensed School Librarian, currently employed at Upsala High School in Upsala, MN. I have been trained to help elementary students build their basic math and reading skills. I have been doing private tutoring for over three years in the areas of English and reading for grades K-12, elementary math, ACT test prep, and college writing. Prior to private tutoring, I worked for two years in after school programs assisting students with homework, study skills, and basic skills.

For math and reading tutoring, I like to use games that engage students and build basic skills. I also use flashcards, props, and real life examples. My ACT test prep consists of students taking practice tests, reviewing their areas of struggle, and reviewing basic test strategies. Finally, I offer college essay editing and help in preparing for presentations. I have experience working with students who's native language is not English. I work hard to see my students succeed and feel that success is my greatest reward.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been tutoring in ACT Prep for a 2 years. I can assist with improving score on all areas of the ACT. I begin by having my students take a practice test. We then review wrong answers and identify areas of struggle. We then spend time improving those areas and learning basic test taking strategies. I help students identify the score they need to get into their desired college and help them to reach that score.

ACT Math

I have been helping students prepare for their ACT tests for 2 years now. When preparing for the test, I help students become familiar with the test format. I also review with them the content that will be on the test so that they feel confident and prepared for their ACT.

ACT Reading

I have been tutoring students preparing for their ACT for a little over a year now. In tutoring for the ACT Reading portion, I find it important to share two of the best reading strategies- one for non-fiction and one for fiction. I also share with students basic test taking strategies that help improve the test. Finally, we take time going over practice tests to familiarize the student with the format and types of questions on the test while improving their reading skills.

ACT Science

I have been assisting students with Test Prep for the past 2 years. I help students become familiar with the test format and review in depth the content of the test. The ACT Science test consists of mostly graph reading and a little bit of critical thinking. When working with students on this test I point out helpful strategies and ways to determine which charts and figures will answer each question.

Reading

As a Licensed School Librarian, part of my job is to build student skill and interest in reading. I believe that reading is an extremely important skill and do all that I can to support it. For all students, I focus on helping them find books that interest them so that they learn to love reading. For elementary students, my focus is on basic skills. I use phonics and sight word recognition to build student reading fluency and confidence. As students get further along, I work with them on comprehension, especially with nonfiction works. Building these skills provides students a path to success in the future.

SAT Math
