I am currently a student at Iron Range Engineering, an educational program through Minnesota State University Mankato that on top of the technical knowledge also focuses on various aspects of professionalism, including writing, presentation skills, and time management. The program expects the student to work independently and learn the way he/she does best. This means spending time getting to know the exact way you and others around you learn. I am pursuing an Integrated Engineering degree with an emphasis is Biomedical Engineering through this program.
In my past, I have tutored at Ridgewater college in Willmar while working on my basic engineering requisites. I focused on Math, English, and Chemistry. I did this for a spring and summer semester. I found most of my students came to me with Math problems. I had many return students and students that would seek me out intentionally. Over the summer, I spent much of my time being the only available tutor, and though still focusing on the aforementioned subjects, I would put in a genuine effort to help any student that walked in, even if their concern was outside of my subject list. I learned that the reason many of my 'regular' students came back was because, according to them, I was adept at gauging their confusion levels and knew to change my approach when the student wasn't understanding. I had a lot of fun tutoring and enjoyed both the challenge of teaching as well as the satisfaction of watching a student reach the "Eureka!" moment.
I have also worked as sales associates at multiple places, and in the food industry (waitress and line cook). From those jobs, I took away skills in handling problems and in customer interactions. I have a previous degree in Veterinary Technology from Ridgewater College that I earned in 2005 with a 3.49 Cum GPA. Every lesson my son is 'getting it' more and more! He actually looks forward to seeing what he gets on his math tests. This is a huge step since he used to avoid checking his math test grades online at all costs. Confidence keeps improving in math concepts!! What will we ever do without Melissa?
Update: April 28th lesson
Our son had a double lesson with Melissa because the concepts were very difficult for him and apparently the rest of the class. Last week when this difficult concept came up he thought he 'got it' and worked on other things with Melissa during their hour but when he took the quiz he got a very poor grade. The good news is just about everyone else in class was totally lost, so the teacher allowed the students a re-do. The teacher sent home a lengthy packet for the kids to do the difficult concept over and over again. Melissa worked with our son and did almost 2 hours on the packet. Now he REALLY got it! That's what he needs when some concepts are more difficult, more than an hour for sure. I feel bad for the kids in the class who were just as lost and didn't have a personal tutor to help them. The teacher just goes way too fast and let's face it, there isn't enough time in a 50 minute class to make sure ALL kids are on board.
The day after his 2 hour lesson with Melissa he retook the quiz and was really firing on all cylinders! He took his time, checked answers and did not feel near as intimidated as he would have without Melissa's help. He is so much more confident in every math lesson. Seriously, he has gone from rock bottom in regards to confidence all the way to attempting to explain his tough lesson and show how-to-steps to us, his parents. So the tutored has become the tutor!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In college, I have passed all pre-college and college level algebra with solid A's. I enjoy algebra at all levels and find it fun to help others understand it and hopefully find some joy in it too. At the end of precalculus (college algebra II/trigonometry) at Michigan Technological University (MTU), I received an award for earning the highest grade in the entire course. I also was send a letter formally asking me to consider a math degree from the math department at said university.
I then switched my schools from MTU to Ridgewater college in Willmar due to expense of an out of state university tuition. In my second semester at Ridgewater, I was hired to be a peer tutor in math, chemistry, and English. Most of the students I helped were struggling in math, and many would come to me on a weekly basis or even more often. Although there were multiple math tutors there, I always seemed to be the one with the most students. When the next semester came around and I had too heavy a work load to peer tutor, I had many of my previous students stop me in the hall way and inquire on what my availability would be that semester. They would be rather downtrodden at the news that I wasn't going to be able to dedicate time to work at the tutoring center. I personally took this as one of the biggest compliments and encouragements to how well I do in tutoring, especially on the math level.
