Hi, I'm Laura! I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and a minor in journalism, then moved onward to graduate school, where I earned a Master's, then a PhD, in Philosophy. I started teaching college students of all sorts as soon as I started my graduate work, and I haven't slowed down since. I am still teaching full time and by far, my favorite parts of teaching are the personal interactions I have with students on their own journeys. My teachers gave me confidence and really changed my life, and helped me love the process of learning, and I use my own experiences to identify with and help students on their own learning paths.

Watching that "light bulb" moment of a student is one of the most rewarding parts of teaching, and often that moment is the first step in the life of a student on a journey of loving knowledge. I want to help my students as much as possible in not just memorizing the material, but in understanding what they are doing, so they can be independent and confident in their learning.

I have over eight years of experience teaching all kinds of philosophy classes, which also include many issues involving religion, literature, and social and political history. I also provide services in essay writing (including brainstorming, identifying a thesis, building an argument, research, and citations) and proof-reading. I am also an editor for an international philosophy journal, and my own work is published in peer-reviewed journals. Reading and writing philosophically commands an understanding of vocabulary, argumentative structure, reading comprehension, and clarity in writing--I have been writing and teaching these now for many years.

Excellent Philosophy Tutor

Laura knows her material very well and makes sure to do plenty of preparation beforehand. She does an excellent job of explaining material and cares about her students. Have enjoyed working with her and can recommend.

Paul, 11 lessons with Laura

Knowledgeable, patient, and helpful tutor

Laura helped me to go through a solid outline with gaining my main ideas and evidence for an essay. She started simple and reviewed a basis of the prompt and the reading the prompt was based on, then slowly helped me to dive into the outline. Now, I feel much more confident in explaining my arguments and ideas for the construction of my essay.

Jenna , 1 lesson with Laura

Knowledgeable

She went over Hume (cause and effect). She was very efficient and patient and I felt like she was helping me understand the material. I felt she taught me versus just went over the material I asked to go over and helped me become more confident in my answers.

College essay

It was my daughter first meeting with Laura. It was very helpful to get lots of ideas to even begin to start the essay process! Cannot wait to see what they accomplish next session!
