Hello! After graduating from Bowdoin College with a B.A. in Political Science and Visual Art, I've taught English abroad on a Fulbright grant and spent the last three years as a journalist and now full-time freelance writer. Both in college and on Fulbright, I tutored K-12 students in English grammar, sentence structure, essay composition and reading comprehension.
In my spare time, I enjoy creative writing -- both fiction and nonfiction -- and have taken courses on plot structure, character development, narrative strategy and more through a local literary center. In college, I also benefitted from our research librarians, professors and writing center to improve my own essay structure and help get my ideas fully onto the page. As both a student and a journalist, I have become comfortable tackling a wide range of subject matter and condensing research into clear, engaging narratives. Through my fiction writing and classes, I'm familiar with story elements and what to look for when reading for school.
As a classroom teacher in Slovakia, as well as a tutor and YMCA program coordinator, I've worked with students from elementary through high school. I believe relationships and trust are essential to learning, and I like to start by discussing students' goals and interests. From there, we can make a plan with regular scheduled check-ins to ensure we're covering all our bases. During each session, I typically like to focus in on one or two areas for improvement -- leaving some time for us to work through a few examples together, answer students' questions and finish with a comprehension check.
I want to get to know students and help them meet their own goals, while tailoring learning to their interests and making it fun. Feel free to reach out with any questions, or to schedule a lesson!
