Everyone is a learner. Everyone can learn--even when it doesn’t seem possible. My job is to help you understand how you learn best. That is something I love to do.

Much of my experience has been with students receiving special education services, students who struggle in traditional school environments, and people becoming more fluent with the English language.

Experience has taught me that each student is unique and that students learn best when they use their strengths and develop resources, skills, and strategies to overcome challenges.

My top priority is for students to feel comfortable with me and engage in the lesson activities. Students can trust that I have their best interests in mind. I am sensitive to how they feel about learning new skills and information. I help them problem-solve and develop strategies to make learning easier.

A little about my background
Prior to college, I lived 14 of my first 18 years in Cameroon, in a region of the country that uses French as its official language. We lived among other English-speaking families, but I spent time interacting with other kids and adults who spoke languages local to the area. French was the language we used for conversation. I am no longer fluent in French; however, I continue to be interested in the power of language and the impact communication continuously has on our lives.

My years in school eventually led to a BA degree from St. Olaf College, a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology from University of Minnesota, licenses to teach students with learning disabilities and emotional behavior disorders, and administrator licenses for secondary education and special education.

I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in French and a Master of Arts degree in Educational Psychology.  I also completed graduate work in Educational Administration.  Through my education, I earned several teaching licenses.  Most of my full-time work has been in teaching and school administration. That includes about 14 years teaching English Language Learners part-time.

Reading,

Reading

I have many years of experience with students who find academic skills to be difficult, especially reading. The school district I have been with targets reading as a fundamental skill that is part of all instruction, regardless of the grade level. Every school has reading specialists who worked with teachers to develop ways to incorporate reading instruction into their classes. As a result, reading skills have increased and graduation rates have improved district-wide. I bring to my tutoring lessons resources and instructional strategies I have developed through that district focus on reading. I find them to be especially effective when one-on-one with a student.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have many years of experience teaching and leading programs for students benefiting from alternatives to traditional school. The learning plans for almost all the students included developing good study skills. We helped the students with organizing materials, organizing their time, becoming goal-oriented, self-awareness of preferred learning styles, studying techniques, problem-solving, and becoming confident and self-forgiving learners.

I have many years of experience with students who find academic skills to be difficult, especially writing. The school district I have been with targets writing as a fundamental skill that is part of all instruction, regardless of grade level. It is a necessary skill for college- and career-readiness. Teachers receive professional development and ongoing support for embedding writing instruction into their lessons. One result of this district-wide focus is that I have developed instructional strategies and resources that I can bring to my tutoring lessons. I find them to be especially effective when one-on-one with a student.
