Hamline University (Elementary Education)
I just graduated from Hamline University with a degree in Elementary Education and Political Science. This fall I will be student teaching in a first grade classroom in order to get my license to teach. I have worked as a tutor at an elementary school for the last four years. While tutoring at Hamline Elementary, I worked with students of all age groups as well as various subjects.
I love working with kids and seeing them grow academically. It amazes me to see the little differences you can see just by working with them for a short amount of time. I think all kids are capable of succeeding in school, they may just need that extra push to get them there. This is why I love working as an educator as well as a tutor.
I worked as a literacy tutor over the summer where I had to create specific lessons for students. I understand the basic literacy tools that students need in order to become better readers. I have also taken courses in college on teaching literacy.
I have tutor in common core classrooms while working at Hamline Elementary. As well have learned these skills in my courses at Hamline.
I worked on spelling with students as a tutor at Hamline elementary.
I had a clinical in my literacy class at Hamline that was in a kindergarten classroom. Phonemic awareness was one of the main things that we worked on in the lessons that I had planned for my students. I also worked on phonics while working with the Minnesota Literacy Council.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
