About Megan

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Writing Studies at the University of Minnesota, where I teach first-year writing and technical and professional writing. I hold a B.A. in English from Mount Holyoke College and an M.A. in Rhetoric from Carnegie Mellon University. I have 6 years of formal, in-person and online writing tutor experience, with a particular focus on working with students for whom English is a second language. I also work as a freelance editor of academic and professional documents.

One of my greatest joys in life is teaching people how to read and write -- and to enjoy themselves, in the process. To me, reading and writing are not skills that begin and end with a certain document; they are processes of inquiry that are larger than a given assignment. I work to help people develop an understanding of their learning processes that will aid them in future contexts. One of my favorite parts of teaching is getting people to see themselves as purposeful, valuable contributors to ongoing, relevant conversations -- conversations that matter.

I am available to tutor between 9 a.m. -- 5 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, with flexibility for some weekend hours, as well. I can meet with you at a Minneapolis or Saint Paul library or coffee shop or online. I look forward to working with you to help you achieve your goals!

I am skilled at providing detailed, personalized feedback that makes abstract concepts practical and tangible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

After taking formal training courses at Mount Holyoke College and Carnegie Mellon University, I worked in Mount Holyoke's Speaking, Arguing, and Writing Center for 2 years and Carnegie Mellon's Global Communication Center. In both places, I helped undergraduate and graduate students with both written and spoken projects. Every first-year writing and technical and professional writing course I've taught for the last 3 years at the University of Minnesota has a unit on delivering effective presentations. I also practice what I preach by presenting regularly at regional, national, and international conferences. I've presented at the Rhetoric Society of America, the joint conferences of the National Conference on Peer Tutoring and Writing/International Writing Centers Association, the International Writing Across the Curriculum Conference, the Great Plains Alliance for Computers and Writing, ProCOMM, and Feminisms and Rhetorics, as well as have been invited to give professional development presentations in the Writing Studies Dept. at the University of Minnesota.
