About Casey

I have fifteen years experience as an English teacher, writing/reading tutor, and student mentor, including eight years as a professor of literature at Macalester and three years as a writing instructor at Duke. I teach because I love working with students -- inspiring them to believe in themselves and their talents, enabling them to experience the excitement of learning, linking writing and the study of literature with their own lives.

I've worked with students of all ages: middle and high school students interested in building their skills as readers and writers; college students tackling specific courses, assignments, and longer writing projects; students applying to graduate school, preparing for the GRE, or working on graduate theses.

I believe the best teachers are also coaches and mentors, and to this end, I work one-on-one with students to build their confidence and give specific advice on steps to improve their writing, reading, language skills/grammar, critical thinking, and test taking. I have particular experience helping students through the stages of writing a formal argumentative essay, from the kernel of an argument and the building of a thesis through the structure of a paper outline and drafts, and I always share sample essays and give extensive feedback. I also have experience training students how to make oral presentations, and enjoy helping them learn how to conquer stage-fright and grab the attention of an audience. Additionally, I've been a mentor to students applying to colleges, study abroad, and graduate programs throughout the US and Europe.

There's nothing more satisfying than knowing that you've empowered someone to believe in their own abilities as a writer, thinker, and communicator. I am a very animated teacher and I integrate a range of materials into tutoring sessions (excerpts from essays, short fiction, poetry, graphic novels, photographs, film clips, music) to inspire students and make learning an active and electrifying enterprise that's relevant to students' lives.

My Background:
In my training as a writer and teacher, I’ve earned a Ph.D. and B.A. in English and completed fiction and poetry writing seminars at Yale and Bennington College. As an English professor, I taught courses in literature and film, mentored students through their studies, and helped them navigate the challenges of college life, financial aid, and transfer and graduate applications. I've also received National Endowment for the Humanities and Foreign Language and Area Studies fellowships for research at UCLA and the National University of Ireland-Galway, as well as summer residencies in Berlin, Dublin, Belfast, and Barcelona.

International Experience / Languages:
I've spent time living and working in Spain, Ireland, and Germany, and as a result I'm very comfortable working with international students. I'm fluent in Spanish and have basic proficiency in German and Irish-Gaelic.

I look forward to collaborating with future students and learning from each other!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have 10+ years experience teaching English: writing, reading skills, literature (American, British, Irish, world lit), with a focus on students age 15-25.

Writing

I have a Ph.D. in English literature/writing from Duke and a B.A. in English from Yale. After teaching composition and writing seminars at Duke, I taught courses in modern literature/film and writing at Macalester for 8 years. I've also published essays in literary journals and magazines and am currently writing a book on art and empathy. I love teaching, especially empowering students to improve their writing and expand their ability to express themselves.
