About Diane

My number one priority is that you or your child gets results and is engaged with what we are working on. With ACT that means I'm always paying attention to how the student is thinking and how I can best prioritize the skills they need to do better. With academic students it means finding what they understand, finding what they don't, and bridging that gap at a speed they can understand but are still engaged with. The value of tutoring comes from individualized attention, so whatever I can do to bring more of that to you or your child's experience is very important to me.

I have tutored and coached for years, and I currently work only on educating students 1:1, so my students are always my number one priority. I will go out of my way to make sure that you or your child is getting the materials and time they need to catch up and excel.

I have a broad background, having studied political science and computer science at the U of M. This gave me exposure to most subjects and I am comfortable with almost anything at the high school level. I especially like working with math, computer science, economics and ACT students.

I have flexible hours and locations. I'm able to meet right from school getting out through the rest of the day. I mainly work in the North-West suburbs but please ask me about other locations.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Science

I scored a 36 on the ACT science section. I have spent significant time perfecting how to convey the many tricks and and skills needed to improve ones score.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD diagnosis both tutoring as well as on the teams I coach. As a child I was diagnosed with ADHD and have taken college classes on strategies for handling ADHD symptoms. I am very understanding of the extra structure that ADHD students need.

Computer Programming

I minored in Computer Science at the U of M. I took classes in computer programming in a lot of different languages including C, C++, Java, and VHDL, and many more were used incidentally in my classes.

I have also worked as a web developer using SQL, Java and TCL. I have also worked as a IT Analyst, where I analysed code in various languages in order to describe it to business teams.

Computer Science

I minored in Computer Science at the U of M. I achieved high grades in all of my general CS classes including Algorithms, Discrete Math, as well as the intro courses.

I also worked as a IT Analyst for two years, doing analysis of software requirements and relaying those in simple terms to non-technical people, so I definitely have a strong background in explain technical topics to pretty much anybody!

Discrete Math

I have taken college level discrete math classes. Discrete math is also a large component of computer science, which I have a BA in.

Economics

When earning my political science degree I studied a lot of economic theory, I understand why all of the rules and formulas are the way they are. Economics can seem like a confusing jumble of lines and formulas, but I pride myself on demystifying the complexity. I received a 5 on my AP Econ test, and I'm happy to teach directly to this test in addition to helping with coursework at any level.

Political Science

I have a degree in political science, with an emphasis on government. I also coach LD debate, which largely centers on theories of government. I have worked with many students on writing papers related to political science concepts while coaching speech and debate. I also received a 5 on the AP Government test when I was in high school, so I have personal experience with it.

Public Speaking

I have coached high school speech for three years. I also competed nationally in college speech. I have significant experience with helping others both with their presentation skills as well as with speech writing of a variety of types.

Social Studies

I have a degree in political science with significant coursework emphasis on government and economics. I have worked with students in Speech and Debate to write many papers about various social studies subjects. I have also taken college level coursework in a variety of social studies subjects including anthropology, psychology and history.

Speech

I have coached high school speech at Maple Grove HS for 3 years and sent many students to State and NSDA Nationals. I competed in high school and college speech.
