About Laura

I have great passion helping students reach their full potential. I first begin with understanding each students’ individual academic needs and learning styles. I then create lessons based on these factors. Along with my dedication to working with students, I also know the importance of encouraging hard work. Through both handwork and supportive teachers, I achieved high grade point averages (GPAs). As an undergraduate, I graduated with a 3.84 GPA, and as a graduate student, I graduated with a 3.99 GPA.

I have a K-12 ESL license. For my first three years of teaching, I worked as an ESL teacher in a grade school. I then transitioned into working with adult English learners and have been working with adults for about a year. My focus as an English language teacher is supporting students in the four language modalities: reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

When instructing beginners in reading, I begin with teaching the alphabet and phonics. Additionally, I have beginners read level appropriate texts. For intermediate to advanced students, I support them in learning academic language that pertains to the assigned reading and also support them in developing reading strategies. Examples of strategies include using context clues to figure out meaning of unknown words, extracting main ideas and details from a reading, or understanding the point of view of the author.

During writing instruction for beginners, I have them practice writing short words and simple sentences. For intermediate to advanced students, I encourage them to first get their ideas written down on paper and then work with them in understanding areas of growth. Common areas of growth include understanding subject-verb agreement, knowing which tense to use, and understanding the purpose of prepositions.

When supporting beginners in developing speaking skills, I have students practice responding to simple questions. For intermediate to advanced students, I have them engage in partner activities where they practice saying targeted academic language along with having them focus on responding in complete sentences. For listening activities, I have students listen to questions that pertain to the lesson content and have them provide either verbal or written answers.

I am flexible with places to meet in the Twin Cities. Libraries and coffee shops are a few options. I currently work Monday-Thursday but am available after 4 PM, and I am available on Fridays or the weekend. I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to reach your full potential!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
