Hello! My name is Josh and I am a full-time faculty member of chemistry at the University of Minnesota.

I have been privately tutoring/teaching since 2006 in various capacities and I have been a college faculty member since 2016 after completing my PhD in Chemistry. During my graduate education, I spent lots of time tutoring students, working as a TA, and recognizing my passion is in teaching, which led to my eventual career choice.

My approach to tutoring is to not only make sure you understand the concepts but to get a complete sense for your learning style. I've worked with a wide range of students with varying capabilities, learning styles and special needs. A key goal of an effective instructor is recognizing that every student learns differently. As we work together, I'll observe and make note of the approaches and ways in which we tackle topics, paying special attention to methods that help and don't help you learn a concept. I will constantly modify my approach to make sure material is presented in a way that is best suited to your learning style.

I truly enjoy tutoring and I do it because I am passionate about teaching and learning. Working with students who want to improve their knowledge and understanding of a particular topic or subject is a great experience. I enjoy those moments when a student grasps a new concept for the first time and things "click". I work hard for my students to provide as much help as needed and strive to make myself available in a variety of ways for extra help. As an example, after establishing a connection with a student, students get my cell phone number to allow them to reach out easily and quickly.

While my education is rooted in chemistry, I have experience educating and working with students on a wide variety of topics. Be assured that if you are contacting me for an area outside of chemistry that you still receive the same level of high-quality instruction and teaching my students have come to know me for.

I very much look forward to talking with you.

Microsoft Excel

I use Excel constantly, for both personal and professional uses. In my research I use it for organizing data, creating interactive spreadsheets and allowing myself to become more efficient with my work. In my personal life, I use it for a variety of tasks whether it is exploring budgets, organizing a room layout, keeping track of schedules and more. I'm very proficient in many of the advanced functions within excel and I can work with VBA code to improve the functioning of a spreadsheet. I'm always learning new ways to do something, and if there is something I'm unfamiliar with, I will certainly be able to do some research and come up with a useful answer.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

As a college faculty in chemistry, we often examine problems that require some level of algebra and manipulation to solve them. I frequently work with students that struggle to tackle the algebraic pieces of those questions and the various topics relating to it. As a tutor, I'm very comfortable working with all age ranges on various algebra questions. My familiarity with the subject allows me to come up with creative ways to explain the more challenging topics and help ensure success going forward.

Chemistry

Between working as a college professor and tutoring, I have exposure to almost every type of chemistry with multiple education levels (middle school, high school, college and graduate level). I break down complex topics and make them digestible and easy to understand. At the college/graduate level, I can help with general chemistry, advanced chemistry courses (like physical chemistry, thermodynamics, etc) and any other chemistry related courses (I've worked with students in courses like environmental chemistry and geology). For high school students, in addition to helping with you (or your child's) chemistry course, my specialty also includes assisting students with preparation for the AP chemistry exam and SAT chemistry subject exam. I have a proven method for assessing your knowledge and getting you up to speed efficiently!

Whether it is geometry, algebra, or any other topic, mathematics is a core component of chemistry. As such I have a solid background in mathematics and have worked with a wide number of students to help them understand complex ideas better. As a faculty, I work a lot with students on test taking strategies, understanding how to "study better" and retain the information we're discussing in class. These skills all translate effectively to test preparation for things like the ACT.

Great at explaining material

I’ve worked with Josh in both organic chemistry 1 and organic chemistry 2. His schedule is very flexible, whether scheduling a last minute session or a lesson a few weeks in advance. Josh is patient and great at explaining all aspects of the material. He helps put the information together. I highly recommend meeting with Josh!

Fantastic Tutor

I worked with Josh for second semester Chemistry and it was a really good experience. He helped me learn all the important concepts and made it easier for me to grasp the material the my own professor couldn't. I'm working with him for Organic Chemistry too. Looking forward to it.

Super helpful, one of the best tutors ever!

Josh is such an awesome tutor and really helped me understand organic chemistry! He is super patient with me and really made sure that I was learning the material. He is super caring and was very flexible with scheduling. I would definitely recommend Josh to anyone for chemistry, truly knows what he's talking about, I probably wouldn’t have earned an A without his help!

Excellent. Patient, understanding, and professional.

This was a huge help. We worked on the spreadsheet that contains my financial planning. Josh clearly knows his stuff, and working with him was a great experience.

Is 6 stars an option?

Josh is an incredible tutor! He will always find a way to break down complex topics into small chunks. He also breaks down mechanisms into simple patterns and helps you find connections between all the reactions you are doing. He is very patient, kind, and cheerful! He is also very flexible with scheduling and always found a way to make time for me. He has helped me go from a 42% on one test to an 89% on the next! I couldn't recommend him more highly.

Meghna, 10 lessons with Josh

Very knowledgable.

My tutoring session with Josh was very helpful. My session was better than any session I have done at my University. I will definitely use Josh again. I also am very grateful that he was available on such a short notice.

Josh is a STAR!

Our daughter's Chem Tutor, Josh M, was phenomenal! As a college Chem professor, we couldn't have asked for a more experienced and knowledgeable tutor. He was flexible with scheduling, ultra reliable, and put our daughter at ease from Day 1. Great experience - Great Tutor!

Best tutoring decision ever!

My son was struggling in high school sophomore chemistry honors. In a short period of time, Josh was able to give my son the tools, background and knowledge to earn an A minus in the class. Josh knew when to support, when to push, and when to let my son take the lead to build his confidence. Josh was flexible and accommodating to schedule tutoring sessions to suit our son’s exam and homework schedule. He went beyond our expectations and even worked in a tutoring session for the final exam during his airport layover. Josh was great to work with and I highly recommend him for chemistry tutoring. He will be your best chemistry tutoring decision too.

Mari-Paule, 15 lessons with Josh

Very flexible

Josh was able to help me with a pressing research problem far outside the standard chemistry tutoring he normally does. His long experience as a professor really shines through!
