About Sharon

I am enthusiastic about my teaching and tutoring practice! I love to see my students succeed, and to watch their faces as they achieve a goal their goals. I love tutoring because the process is sharing with each student some tips that have helped me on my academic path. I earned my bachelors degree in English Literary Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus. Immediately after that I began a master's degree program in library and information science (MLIS) from Dominican University (formerly Rosary College). Even the searching skills and strategies I was able to perfect, helped to round out my academic background into a cohesive plan. In fact, my specialties in library research are medicine, health administration, nursing, and I was a trainer, teacher, and librarian for over 20 years.

I specialize in teaching techniques for writing theses and other research papers. I love to share the tips and pearls that I found helpful when I was an active student. In addition, I have a background in library and information science and I will also coach you on doing the research for your topic and how to display your search results in the style format you are expected to use. You will learn the unique formats for your reference section or your bibliography. While I am a generalist, I have extensive experience (nearly 20 years) teaching courses for health care workers. My emphasis was always to help students find reliable and valid references - to find the best of the available evidence on a topic - whether it is evidence-based management, or evidence-based medicine or nursing. I will guide your writing process if you need that and then follow-up by proofreading your paper - that is, after you have proofed and perfected your writing.

I know teaching is best when the tutor gears the lesson formats and curriculum to each student. I adapt to each of my students' style. A key tenet to my belief is that the information available to you today is greater than the amount you can process easily. I will help you manage the scope of your project. As your tutor you have access to my wide range of interests and expertise. Your success is my goal!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have. My schedule is quite flexible and I often work on short notice. I look forward to hearing from you!

"Awesome proofreader!"

Sharon replied on 10/14/2016

Erica's capstone paper was on a medical topic. Nursing and medicine are my specialties. I had been blessed with a great support system when I earned my Library Degree, and I vowed to myself that I would give back to other women doing graduate work. Especially understandinh that the research I do affects patient care I realized I am best suited to work with writers in the health sciences and medicine. It is a great feeling to share editing tips with students in my tutoring practice, especially those who are as sincere as Erica.

"Great tutor - works hard to be available when you need her"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

Having earned my B.A. degree in English Literary Studies at the University of Minnesota, I learned that each word an author chooses is purposeful in telling a story. Each word assists the reader in capturing the authors' meaning in context. Specific vocabulary clarify for the discerning reader something in literature as the words transfer truths about humankind. Therefore, students' life experiences assist them in understanding the meaning projected by the author. To this day, when I read a complex novel, I keep a current English language dictionary by my side. I use it to understand what I read. Every word adds clarity and is necessary to understand the reading in context.

English

What is so unique about an English, literary studies bachelors degree? I earned my bachelors degree at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus. The University provided a venue for English literature students to be critics of the authors' writing in terms of attributes ascribed to the characters. Reading and studying lEnglish literary studies provided the opportunity to evaluate the characters and authors personalities, leadership ability, moral and ethical values and and more generally exposes the theme of the content inherent In a most creative manner and upheld my belief in my own abilities to think critically. Thus, my English degree developed a my character and a sense of what is meaningful in life, In turn, understanding the authors' premises helps me tutor students in English literature with garnering the kernel of truth which I consider comprehending what one reads.

Grammar

My long history with my previous employer gave me a span of time to perfect my writing and presentation software. I had the good fortune to have a career as a librarian and manage the Library Outreach Program for 18 years. All my handouts and presentation software and webinars I created required me to write all my own material. I had colleagues in my office who I asked to do a last run-through of proof-reading my work since it would be given to the public in small or rural healthcare institutions in outstate Minnesota. I wanted perfection.

I can help students by sharing the tips that worked for me. When it comes to writing, I always want my students to receive error-free handouts.

Literature

As I continue on in praise of my English literary studies degree earned at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities campus I continue to emphasize what I believe about literature. Whether fiction or non-fiction, authors develop characters and write about subjects that have meaning to their writers. Authors and visions of life they wish to express to their audiences. Students are more capable of comprehending what they read.

In addition to my English degree I also earned a masters of library and information science with a focus on health sciences literature. I have taught students of all ages how to mine the proprietary databases they have access to through the public library or through their high school or universities. I have nearly 18 years of teaching experience in creating a thorough, comprehensive search strategy. As we all know, "what you put in is what you retrieve." That is, ask the question in a search engine or database using authority language will help you retrieve more relevant, pertinent results. I am so comfortable with what I do or do not know because I have a well-developed skill in searching for information I need for work or school and I love sharing those tips I have learned on my journey.

Proofreading

I also had experience in proofreading an academic newsletter. Grammar and punctuation are at the top of my list of areas of expertise. If what you read is incomprehensible, then think about whether the writer had a proofreader or if the writer used style manuals. It is a pleasure to finalize a piece of writing knowing that all the Ts are crossed and i(s) dotted. My former manager used the word "thorough" to describe me and other strong adjectives for my colleagues. Yes. I can teach editing and proofreading skills because it is the natural progression of reading, writing. and comprehension. It gives me great pleasure to fine-tune a body of work that needs "cleaning up/" I can be that tutor for you, too! My BA, MLIS, and my certified professional project management credentials are so inter-related I am amazed at how my educational background and experience can be so cohesive. As a tutor, you will find I focus on your need to know -- what your learning style is and my response in teaching style.

Reading

Way before college, I kept a dictionary by my side while reading. My vocabulary never seemed up to par with what I was reading. To this day, I still have a dictionary by my side when reading for comprehension. For all of our abilities, if you do not understand a vocabulary word you might misinterpret what you read - which in turn can confuse your understanding and comprehension. I have been a life-long learner, and life-long reader. It made my studies so meaningful that I had a cohesive education plan that included literature, reading, writing, grammar and editing my own writing. With what has been a blessing to me I will share with my students because successes like that are beloved treasures we want to share with others who seek to achieve more in their education. Again, my masters in library and information science (MLIS) from Dominican University has been the cement to my cohesive college program. I love to share! Contact at any time to discuss tutoring options.

SAT Writing

The SAT writing test can be quite daunting when you're a teenager. However, I find it refreshing to coach students and show them how you have some freedom within the confines of the writing test.

I am able to help students think broadly and take their turn at writing an amazing essay. I say amazing, and sincerely mean that, because you get to choose the focus and then apply the logic to complete an outstanding essay - and just enjoy the process.

As a tutor, I empower my students to take risks. I truly believe the challenge you are presented with will be well worth your efforts.

Vocabulary

Words, words, words—so many easily available for a writer; each has a unique meaning when used in a particular context. So, when the context is changed, the word may have a slightly different meaning. Precision is everything when you employ a word when writing a scholarly paper. For most of us, who mastered reading the classics or mastered writing for publication, it was a given that you should choose your words wisely and use them sparingly. By that I mean tighten up the language, in other words, do not pad your paper with unnecessary words be precise and make every word count. Scholarly writing should be more formal than what you use in a letter or e-mail.

I had a habit or practice of sitting on the couch with a dictionary near my side when I read college textbooks. That practice was so useful I understood the meaning of a word in context and I continue that practice even now. In addition, whenever I am unsure about whether to hyphenate a word, I check the newest available dictionary.

I still continue the practice of learning (and re-learning) academic, scholarly words. What a smorgasbord of choices from which I can sample. When it comes to vocabulary, variety is good for engaging the reader.

Writing

I love expressing concepts and have learned how to create expert search strategies based on concepts vs free language or text words. I have extensive (over 18 years of experience) teaching health science students how to search proprietary databases. Health care and health literacy are my passion! My undergraduate degree is a BA in English, literary studies and I immediately earned a masters in library and information science (MLIS). I have experience in performing research strategies for health sciences, nursing, and medical students. I was an editorial assistant for an international transplant journal, formerly published in Denmark while I worked in an academic department at the University of Minnesota. I have 5 or so years of experience in processing medical journal articles in transplantation and later took on duties for over 18 years as a medical librarian for a large Twin Cities Health Care Organization. Need to cite a reference for a thesis or other publication? I am an expert on matching citation styles to the type of paper you are writing or submitting a thesis or dissertation.

Awesome proofreader! — Sharon went above and beyond to make sure my paper for school was top notch. She took the time to read up on my topic before our first session so she was familiar with the ideas/concepts discussed in my paper and was able to provide useful feedback beyond grammar and syntax. She kept in contact with me throughout the process and was always available to answer questions. Sharon was able not only ab ...
