About Jennifer

Hi, I'm an experienced tutor for language arts (reading, writing, grammar and composition). Tutoring is incredibly rewarding for me and I like to help my students improve their grades and confidence.

I tutor K-12 students and occasionally business professionals. I provide both online and in-person tutoring. For in-person lessons, we can meet at the public library near your home. For online tutoring, we can communicate via email.

I received my BA in English Literature and MA in Language Arts Education from the University of St Thomas. Currently, I am an education consultant and substitute teacher for multiple school districts in the Twin Cities and surrounding suburbs.

I previously taught Public Speaking, Composition, American Authors and British Literature courses at Brown Community College, and taught English As A Second Language and Composition at Shantou University, in Shantou, China as a visiting instructor.

My tutoring activities align with the Minnesota Common Core State Standards for K-12 Language Arts, to ensure grade-level comprehension in the language arts area. I use differentiated instruction and cooperative learning strategies to facilitate my students' learning.

These teaching strategies allow me to meet the student at his/her reading and writing comprehension level, and allow for improvement in a timely manner. I create fun practice exercises for reading, writing, spelling, vocabulary and grammar that the student can use between tutoring sessions, and I tie those practice exercises to the student's current school homework.

My tutoring is meant to be supplemental to current homework assignments, and support the student in his/her learning efforts. My tutoring motto is: "never stop learning because life never stops teaching."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Career Development

When I taught community college at Brown College, I taught a professional business writing course. The business writing course covered: interviewing techniques, resume writing how-to, job searching and interview preparation using social media, social networking and online search engines.

Common Core

During my time as a graduate student at the University of St. Thomas' MAT program, I had to learn what the Minnesota Common Core Standards are for K-12 Language Arts. So, I am able to design my lesson plans now around the Common Core Language Arts standards for Minnesota.

English

I have taken graduate courses in linguistics, grammar and composition instruction as part of my Master's in Education degree. I have taught grammar, English conversation, and writing composition classes at Brown College, and to middle school and high school students.

ESL/ESOL

I taught English in China at a Chinese University for one year. During that time, I taught English Composition and Business English Conversation. For the Business English Conversation class, I incorporated ESL teaching strategies.

Film

For 3 years, I freelance wrote for MN Film Arts' a non-profit film organization that is dedicated to fostering an appreciation of film arts in the Twin Cities metro area. I worked with film programmers to promote their films by writing press releases, conducting Q&A interviews with film-makers that was published online, and writing film previews and film reviews for local Twin Cities publications. I also created, produced, and co-hosted a community radio show called "Movie Talk" which featured film news, film trivia, film history, and interviews with local, national and international filmmakers. I also am a movie buff and know a lot of movie trivia.

Grammar

I have taught grammar and writing composition classes at Brown College and to middle school and high school students. I have also taught grammar to ESL students. I can teach verb usage, sentence structure, clauses, tenses, parts of speech, determiners, questions, object and predicate, infinitives, and modals.

Literature

I have taught college level literature courses in American Literature, British Authors, and courses in poetry. I have taught poetry units and literature units to middle school and high school students that were 3 to 5 week units, or part of a survey course. I have a vast knowledge of contemporary poetry and classical poetry, in addition to American writers and journalists that are taught in middle school and high school classroom curriculum in Minnesota.

Proofreading

When I taught Public Speaking and Resume Writing classes at the community college level, I also taught students how to proofread their own speeches and resumes. The purpose of tutoring students how to proofread their own work is to show them the difference between the writing and thinking processes that cause spelling and grammatical errors in writing. My goal with teaching student proofreading techniques is to make them a better thinker and better writer, so that they can produce a cleaner paper.

Public Speaking

I taught two years of Public Speaking at the community college level, and Conversational English at a Chinese university for one year.

Types of speeches I can teach: Persuasive (emotional/logical appeal about a topic), Informative (speeches about objects, events, processes, concepts), Impromptu (speeches without any preparation, 5 minutes long), and Extemporaneous (prepared speech that sounds conversational and spontaneous).

Reading

I took several graduate education courses in how to teach reading to middle and high school students, as part of my Masters in Education. To help students improve their reading, I teach them how to preview text and vocabulary, read with a purpose (fix passive reading errors), mark up their reading text using AVID, show types of reading strategies to help them make connections to the text, teach students how to summarize their reading using reading strategies.

Spelling

I have taught vocabulary and spelling to middle school students and high school students. I have several certified teaching strategies that I use to help students recall the correct spelling of words and to understand vocabulary and definitions.

Study Skills

I have a Master's in Education and have taught study skills to community college students, ESL students, middle school students and high school students in various English Literature classes. These study skills improve students reading and writing comprehension, test taking ability and improve their confidence and ability to meet academic expectations at any grade level.

As a study skills tutor, I can provide study strategies in the following areas; active reading strategies, active listening strategies and presentation skills, effective note taking strategies, time management strategies, and test taking strategies.

Theater

For a number of years, I have acted in community theater productions. I also studied theater as a minor during college. So, I took many theater courses for academic credits. I have read many plays and written papers about them. I enjoy reading and attending plays and discussing them with people.

Vocabulary

During my teaching experience with middle school and high school students, I included vocabulary lists with reading assignments. When students would read a novel or a short story, I would include a vocabulary list for each book chapter or paragraph that were new words to the students. I would give the students the vocabulary word, and the definition, then ask the students to locate how the vocabulary word is used in the text and provide examples of context evidence. I also gave students vocabulary quizzes.

Writing

I have taught Composition Writing classes at the community college level. I have also taught middle school students and high school students how to write 5 different kinds of essays that are commonly taught in classrooms (narrative, cause and effect, persuasive, compare and contrast, the 5 paragraph essay). I can also teach students how to write different kinds of poems (free verse, haiku, narrative, prose, concreate, cinquain, limerick, lyric).

Very Patient

Jennifer is a patient and easy to approach tutor. She was willing to help our son with a writing assignment. She gave instructions on how to build a well organized outline and also proofread the entire essay a few days later. Her suggestions were meaningful and helpful. Thank you.
