I find that students have a wide range of needs and learning styles. Some students just need a little extra boost to get them through a tough spot in a class. Some students need someone to sit with them while doing homework to keep them on track. Some students need coaching on how to even approach the study Math or Physics. Some students learn better by having concepts explained clearly. Some students learn better if they are asked a series of leading questions, so that they find the answers themselves.
One of the great joys of tutoring is learning how a student thinks and works so that I can best support their studies. A lot of times, I find that students are much more competent than they first think. They just need a little help finding their strength. Of course, better grades often end up being a result as well.
I have been tutoring in a formal capacity for three years. Before that, I helped classmates in college and grad school in an unofficial capacity. Many of my friends from college credit me with the fact that they passed their Physics and Math classes. I also have 8 years of experience working with ages pre-k through high school in a Sunday School setting
I have a bachelors degree in Physics and Mathematics from St. Olaf College and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. Along with tutoring, I also currently work as a Research and Development engineer at a large, technology driven, manufacturing company. I am so glad I found David! He has done a great job explaining complex topics in an easy to understand way. He is very patient and will explain the same thing in several ways until I understand it. I don’t know how I would get through this class without his explanations and help!
David helped me with college physics 2 and rather than just show me how to do problems I didn't understand, he showed me a thought process and let me solve it for myself. If I made an error in my thinking he respectfully corrected me. I would recommend him!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
