Saint Paul College (Associate in Arts)
Hello and welcome to my Wyzant page! As a peer tutor at Saint Paul College during the 2013-2014 academic year, I had the honor and privilege of tutoring over 2,000 students with English/ESL/Writing/Music difficulties, some of whom had cognitive challenges or developmental disabilities. I graduated in May 2014, cum laude.
For English/ESL/Writing, I am certified with the College Reading and Learning Association, and am qualified to work with all undergraduate students (including high school) looking for assistance with:
*Basic writing skills
*Types of Sentences
The above list is just a sample of what I assisted students in, but it covers a majority of the issues I found most students have.
For Music, I won the prestigious Augsburg College Presidential Music Scholarship, which is awarded to one incoming music student per year. The qualifications to receive such an award are:
*A knowledge of composition
*Completion of at least one music theory course
*Exceptional talent at an instrument or voice
I have also performed with the Minnesota Opera and have written several articles in my local newspaper about music history.
My tutoring method is based on the Socratic method of teaching. That is to say, rather than attempt to lecture or "force-feed" a student information, I ask the student questions that make him/her think critically about the material at hand. Not only does this allow for faster understanding of new material, it also allows the material to be understood more thoroughly.
I hold myself to a professional standard, and will frequently ask for feedback with tutored students to ensure that they are getting what they pay for! I will not bill a student if the tutoring session was unproductive.
I have an 8-hour cancellation policy, meaning that I will let students know at least eight hours in advance of a scheduled tutoring session if I cannot come (most of the time I will strive for a full 24 hours' notice). Likewise, I ask that a student who needs to cancel a scheduled tutoring session informs me at least eight hours before the previously-scheduled session.
To ensure that students have a productive place in which to learn, I frequently hold sessions at Saint Paul College, conveniently located in downtown Saint Paul, MN. I can travel to another location if a student requests it, but I do ask that I receive advance notice so I can arrange my transportation accordingly.
I look forward to hearing from you! Have a good day. Hello and welcome to my Wyzant page!
