I specialize in test preparation including MCAT, SAT, ACT, GRE, plus college and high school tests in chemistry, math, and physics. My past experience includes teaching the MCAT prep course for Stanley Kaplan. By tutoring and taking new practice tests as they become available, I keep my knowledge of subjects and tests up to date. I am qualified to tutor in the math and science content areas that make up standardized tests and very much enjoy tutoring these subjects for students in courses in addition to test preparation.
Because literacy is critical to scoring high on tests, I attend to both reading and English content areas and maintain these as qualified subjects. I tutor from a constructivist point of view which means that I guide students to integrate the meaning of physical concepts according to their own unique perspective. With my help, you will be able to assimilate and use central concepts in common sense ways as opposed to trying to memorize and correctly apply dry abstract formulas. This allows much greater confidence, reliability and competency in solving the type of reasoning and word problems that can cause test takers to struggle.
Professionally, I work as a research chemist and materials scientist who has authored nearly 40 patents and many scientific publications. What I get most satisfaction from, however, is helping others through teaching.

Eric has a broad knowledge of math and encouraged thinking through the problem to apply appropriate concepts rather than memorizing formulas. His approach helped prepare for the ACT.
Our high school age daughter has been using Eric for tutoring for several months now. Our daughter is very pleased with Eric's ability to explain and convey complex subject matter in a way that she can understand. Eric is very knowledgeable about the sciences, having tutored her in Pre -AP Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and AP Physics. Eric is easy to work with and readily available. Our family confidently and highly recommends Eric!
Eric is very good at chemistry, math, and other concrete subjects. Unfortunately, he did not focus a lot on the strategy to take the particular test that I was studying for (OAT), which is huge in most cases. Eric focused on working through problems depending on the particular student. Overall, Eric is a pretty good tutor.
Since reviewing our past lesson, Eric has made improvement and has a more broad perspective on the lesson and material and has since added new material for the OAT. This has led to developing a better strategy for future preparation. Again - overall view: good tutor.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
My background includes a large volume of public writing ranging from scientific publications to web sites and catalog sheets, for which proper grammar and English usage is required.
My greatest expertise as a successful research scientist is problem solving, and as a tutor is helping other learn this skill.
I emphasize reading, graphical and math fluency as is required to decode word problems on the ACT, and then work with students to strengthen logic required to set up solutions.
My college course work includes education classes on teaching literacy in middle and secondary schools and concepts from those classes are emphasized in preparing for the ACT.
In addition to building knowledge of important scientific concepts and content, I strengthen student's graphic, mathematical, and reading fluency to promote comprehension of the passages that make up the entire Science portion of the ACT.
I review updates of ACT practice exams as they become available to remain current.
Calculus 1 - 3 at the University of Minnesota average grade = 3.7/4.0 (A-).
PhD in Chemistry (Penn State) + 29 years industrial research experience. Teaching experience in high school and college. Author of 40 patents and 26 publications and presentations.
I took the MCAT test (in the old format of six subject areas) and my score was 76 - equivalent to a 38 in the current 3 subject format. Based on the strength of my test score, I have worked previously as an instructor for the MCAT test at Stanley Kaplan.
I am qualified in all of the subject areas that make up the MCAT including math, algebra, calculus, biology, chemistry, and physics.
I have a PhD in Organic Chemistry + 29 years industrial experience including synthesis. I am the author of 40 patents and 25 scientific publications.
I took three quarters of calculus based Physics for majors at the University of Minnesota with GPA 4.0.
University of Minnesota Pre-Calculus course grade 4.0/4.0 (A).
