About Bruce

Potential clients,
As an educator and parent of 3 children--two of special needs, and one of the two with ADD--I understand the frustration and isolation that my child and family have felt through the school system and my child’s own insecurities. As your tutor, I will do what I can to not just educate you as my client on academics, but to set you up with lifelong skills to help you become a productive part of society. I will also help your parents understand your frustrations, educate them to help you with your studies, organizational skills, and set them up with skills to help you on your life long journey of living with your disability.

As a certified teacher in EBD, LD, both K-12 and Elementary Education, 1st-6th I have many personal resources at my disposal, teacher friends, and am up to date on most technical advances in school programs. I’m also a learner in the process as well, and don’t claim to be a know it all in every subject. I will at times be learning right beside you, because that is how I will always learn better for your sake, and for future clients.

I believe in being Fun, Fair, and Firm. Fun is learning through hands-on activities as much as possible, teaching new or old ways of best understanding, and implementing the skills learned. Fair are my expectations of you and your parents doing the work asked of me to better your life now and future. Fair is also to challenge you but not to frustrate you and your parents. Everything we will be working on will always be in the best interest for you and your future academic career. Firm are my expectations of you as my client meeting with me and being ready to learn with being prepared, having your materials, and in the mind set to better yourself and ready to learn.

The confidentiality of this position is of utmost importance to me. Anything that is confidential you show or share with me, such as IEP’s, report cards, conversations, etc. will be just that. I will be as professional as if it were in my own classroom and will hold myself to those standards/laws written by IDEA, MEA, and NEA. I can and will research agencies that help be advocates for you and your parents, as well as share my professional and personal opinions on any decisions that may arise while I’m your tutor.

As you read this, you’ll notice we’ll be working together on many levels and from many angles for your education, not just now, but for your future.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

First and foremost I have a child of my own who has ADD/ADHD so I understand the "parent side" of this disability. For the academic side, I have taught ADD/ADHD students in different settings since I was 18 years old. From going on week long camping trips in the BWCAW, to being an academic supporter for a day treatment center for children of mental disabilities just this past year. I have my graduate degree from Bethel, and am licensed specifically to teach children with this disability. I have too many years of experience in this area to list specifically all techniques and methods.

Dyslexia

I received my Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) Degree through the graduate school at Bethel University. Through these courses, there were sessions teaching students with both reading dyslexia and math phobias. My training, education, and teaching experiences have sufficiently given me the qualifications to tutor this subject.

Elementary (K-6th)

I knew I wanted to be an elementary teacher since I was a young boy. I received my Elementary Education degree from the University MN Duluth. I was an elementary teacher for 10 years in Texas and taught all subjects while teaching. I have three children of my own whom I helped teach and tutor. My experiences and techniques are too vast to list specifically.

Handwriting

As an licensed SLD Special Education teacher I have had a class specifically teaching handwriting. I have three children of my own whom I helped teach and tutor. I received my Elementary Education degree from the University MN Duluth. I was an elementary teacher for 10 years in Texas and taught all subjects while teaching, including handwriting.

Phonics

I received my Elementary Education degree from the University MN Duluth. I was an elementary teacher for 10 years in Texas and taught all subjects, including reading through the phonemic and whole language approaches. As an licensed SLD Special Education teacher I have had a class specifically teaching reading and the various techniques and believe this subject is the most important a student needs to learn and understand, no matter the difficulty the student may have with this subject.

Reading

I was an early elementary teacher for 10 years, have three children of my own who love reading, and have training in Specific Learning Disabilities, (SLD) for reading which will help with teaching strategies, and techniques to your daughters. I have vast experiences in all language arts subjects which will benefit both your daughters, you as their parents, and myself in helping them.

Special Needs

First and foremost I have two of my own children who have special needs so I understand the "parent side" of special needs. For the academic side, I have taught students with special needs in different settings. Including having special needs in my own classroom, while I taught in Texas. I have my graduate degree from Bethel, and am licensed specifically to teach children with all types of special needs. I have too many years of experience in this area to list specifically all techniques and methods.

Study Skills

I received my Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD) through the graduate school at Bethel University. Through these courses, there were many sessions on teaching study skills to students. Also, having my own child with ADD/ADHD, I've learned other study skills through his teachers, as well researching ideas on the internet on my own. Conducting parent conferences as a teacher, I was able to share my ideas, and discuss their roles in the study habits of their child.
