Calvin College (Biology, Environmental Studies)
I graduated from Calvin College in 2016 with a BA in biology with a minor in sociology and a BS in environmental studies with a focus in geography. School has always been one of my strong points. I received a score of 33 on the ACT, and I was ranked 3rd out of 179 students in my high school graduating class. I have assisted college students in a variety of classes including biology and environmental studies and high school and middle school students in math, physics, and ACT preparation to name a few. I am willing to tutor any grade level in any subject with my strongest subject being math. I have always enjoyed school and excelled at it. I hope to assist students in achieving excellence in school while enjoying it at the same time.
My methods of tutoring usually involve having the students work through problems with me. I explain each step as we go through a new type of problem, and then I let them try it out for themselves on a new problem. I make sure that they understand each step as I explain it. I watch them do the problem, and if they get stuck, I give them pointers in what to look for to help them know what to do next. I like to teach students in the way they learn best. I will change my methods based on the student, and I will communicate with the student and parents to find how each of the students I tutor learn best. This usually enables the student to optimize their performance in a subject. I will use multiple methods to make sure that students are able to use their skills in different circumstances. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
