About Katherine

Helping students reach new levels of success is my passion! I adjust my support to fit each student's individual goals and learning style. I have a B.A. from Smith College and have completed several graduate courses in education (including assessment and intervention). I have been tutoring full-time for several years, and I love to see my students reach their goals.

While I help my students get through their assignments, I build their understanding of the skills needed to complete their work and make class easier. Learning flexible strategies and underlying concepts is the key to building a solid foundation for future success. I am also available to answer questions between sessions and to provide recommendations for additional resources.

Scheduling:
I schedule sessions between 9:00 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. Monday through Thursday. We can arrange to meet at your home, a library, or a coffee shop, whichever is most convenient for you. I travel to Arden Hills, Circle Pines, Hugo, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Maplewood, North Oaks, Roseville, Shoreview, St. Paul, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake, and Woodbury. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been tutoring students to prepare them for the ACT for 5+ years. I stay up to date with the latest changes to the test and tailor my support to fit each student. My clients find that focusing on their skills and goals is a more effective way to improve performance versus a one-size-fits-all program. I look forward to making a plan to fit your needs!

Algebra 1

Algebra is sometimes a student’s first time having trouble with math. It marks a transition to more advanced math coursework to come. But algebra is just math with new terms and definitions! Let me help you demystify algebra and lay a solid foundation for future mathematics coursework.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 builds on the terminology of Algebra 1 and introduces topics like complex matrices, advanced graphing, and systems of linear equations. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of new terms. Let me help you demystify math and lay a solid foundation for future mathematics coursework.

Calculus

The motivations of my students for taking Calculus have varied from simply needing to pass the class, to fulfilling a requirement for their Engineering major or Pre-med program. Whatever your motivation, I am happy to meet you where you are and help you to achieve your goal!

Discrete Math

If your school offers discrete math, you are in luck! I have experience tutoring several students in discrete math, and it is one of the more lively topics of mathematics. Discrete math is grounded in real-world problems, which makes it relevant and fun. I can show you examples related to your interests (biology, business, puzzles, etc.) as we explore this fascinating subject.

Elementary Math

Math is my favorite subject to tutor, because there are so many ways to teach it! I like to relate math to whatever topic interests you (sports, shopping, games, business) and explain concepts in multiple ways until we find what works for you.

Precalculus

Pre-Calculus is a key stepping stone from high school Algebra and Geometry into college-level math and Calculus. In my years working with students at this level, I've found it helpful to meet students at their level. We can review material from previous coursework, and often fill in gaps, in order to build a more solid foundation for their Pre-Calc work.

Statistics

I have experience tutoring probability and statistics at the high school and college levels. I can provide examples that are explained at your level so that you can understand what your teacher and textbook are trying to say. I can get you up to speed so that you can understand your problem sets and pass your exams.

Study Skills

My approach to study skills involves identifying goals, motivation, and strategies for making study sessions effective. No one wants to sit at a desk re-reading notes for hours, especially when it doesn’t give stellar results. Studying science isn’t the same as studying French, so why do we take the same approach? Let’s work together to find strategies that will produce results. I will help you set meaningful, measurable goals so that you can see your progress.

Great results

After a two hour session with Katherine, my son went from being certain he was going to fail his upcoming test (which I think was true) to being fairly confident he would get an A or at least a B. He thanked me for hiring her. In addition to the time she spent with him, she also emailed some worksheets with additional problems for him to practice.
