I adjust my support to fit each student's individual goals and learning style. My summer students typically include college students retaking math courses, high schoolers doing advanced work to get a head start on the next year, and students preparing to take standardized tests including the ACCUPLACER, which is used to determine which course levels are available to incoming college students.
While I help my students get through their assignments, I build their understanding of the skills needed to complete their work and make school easier. Learning flexible strategies and underlying concepts is the key to building a solid foundation for future success. I am also available to answer questions between sessions via messaging. Please note that I offer test prep for those planning to take a standardized test and for students I work with during the semester, but I do not offer last-minute test prep for first time clients.
Helping students reach new levels of success is my passion! I have a B.A. from Smith College and have completed several graduate courses in education (including assessment and intervention). I have been tutoring full-time for several years, working with students ranging from middle school to graduate school. I look forward to working with you this summer!
I schedule summer sessions between 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday. You can click on my schedule to view available time slots which reflects summer openings. We can arrange to meet at your home, a library, or a coffee shop of your choosing. I travel to Arden Hills, Circle Pines, Hugo, Lino Lakes, Little Canada, Mahtomedi, Maplewood, North Oaks, Roseville, Shoreview, St. Paul, Vadnais Heights, White Bear Lake, and parts of Woodbury. Katherine was a super knowledgeable IB math tutor. She was quick to figure out what my daughter needed to know, followed up on the lessons way beyond what we expected, and knew her material. My daughter left every lesson feeling a greater sense of understanding of difficult concepts. She was always very organized, professional, and accommodating. It can be difficult to find a math tutor for higher level math, and she exceeded all of our expectations.
Katherine is doing a great job with our daughter prepare for the ACT. She is teaching her strategies and skills, but she is also instilling confidence in her. She's a great teacher.
Katherine has been tutoring my daughter for several months and we couldn't be happier. My daughter was so stressed about learning math and doing well and she needed the extra instruction time to feel really confident that she understood. She works with Katherine once a week and is doing very well. She looks forward to tutoring and is getting an A in math. It's worth every penny.
Katherine responded very quickly, in short notice, to help my daughter prepare for a test. My daughter appreciated the support and feels more confident going into the test (she has not taken it yet).
Katherine helped my son with college statistics and was awesome. Rather than just going over the material, she took responsibility for ensuring my son worked hard, knew the material, and did well in the course.
Katherine did an excellent job teaching my son strategies to help be successful on his ACT. She provided him with knowledge that he would not have been able to get in online support.
Katherine is very patient and knows her subject material! My daughter has worked with other tutors in the past and said that she feels like she will be successful working with her.
Katherine is a fantastic tutor, very knowledgeable, focused and organized. She understands the importance of starting with simple examples, then building on success and giving timely accurate feedback. She is timely, flexible and reliable. She is consistent in terms of using the behavior plan that we agreed on.
Katherine writes detailed descriptions of each lesson; sharing challenges and triumphs.
I highly recommend her; I hope to keep her as my children's tutor for years to come.
Katherine was prepared, patient, and thorough. She has knowledge of elementary school curriculum and often brought supplemental materials. Both kids and parents thought she was an excellent tutor.
I would like to thank Katherine for the sessions we've had together. She was definitely a good fit for me and I learned techniques that worked for me. I appreciate her time and effort to help me gain better strategies and confidence towards the GRE.
Thank you so much for helping my daughter this spring. Her first ACT scores in math were not very good but after your calm and patient tutoring, her math score jumped up FIVE POINTS!!! Her overall score was up by THREE! I know you have much to do with it. I would recommend you to anyone who needed a great math tutor!
Katherine is a great tutor - flexible and adaptable to the situation at any given time she visits. She also provides practical suggestions for my daughter to find help herself, and learn good skills for researching, etc.
Thanks for working with both girls separately and together. I especially appreciate how you included the girls' curious 5-year-old sister into the activity.
I am so pleased with the progress my daughter has made with her math skills since working with Katherine. I had the best parent/teacher conference ever with my daughter's teacher. Her teacher has seen a marked improvement in my daughter's confidence and skill level in math. She has gone from being below grade level to at grade level in the eight months she has worked with Katherine. I can't tell you how wonderful it feels to hear from her teacher how much of a difference working with Katherine has made in my daughter's math work at school. My daughter even feels confident enough to share with her class the strategies Katherine has been teaching her. I couldn't be more happy!
Katherine is a great tutor. She is so calm and patient with my energetic and focus-challenged child. My daughter's confidence in math has improved so much in just a short time with Katherine. I appreciate all the summaries we get and as Katherine works with my daughter, I also feel she is working with us to also support our daughter's progress. She keeps us all on track. We are very happy! I would recommend Katherine to anyone.
Katherine has been tutoring our daughter for several weeks. The results were noticeable after the first week- in both classroom performance and confidence. She can explain the material in ways our daughter understands. Lauren even commented recently that math can be fun! Katherine is also prompt for lessons, responsive by email, and in all ways very professional in her work.
Katherine was very helpful in regards to helping me look at the subject matter in smaller clusters and then showing me how they all fit together as a whole. She was very kind, patient and great at giving examples I could relate to and visualize easily.
I highly recommend her! It was truly a wonderful learning experience!
How fortunate we were when Katherine began working with our 16 year old son in Algebra 2. She taught him organizational techniques, strengthened his fundamentals, worked with him on daily assignments, and was instrumental in leading him through test preparation. Within just a couple of months, his grade had gone up by two letter grades. Katherine is patient and reassuring, at the same time she encouraged him to reach further. As a result, we witnessed increased confidence in his ability to be successful in math. My only regret was waiting so long before we first made contact with Katherine. We will not hesitate to have her back at the first sign of struggle in the future.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra is sometimes a student’s first time having trouble with math. It marks a transition to more advanced math coursework to come. But algebra is just math with new terms and definitions! Let me help you demystify algebra and lay a solid foundation for future mathematics coursework.
Algebra 2 builds on the terminology of Algebra 1 and introduces topics like complex matrices, advanced graphing, and systems of linear equations. It’s easy to get lost in a sea of new terms. Let me help you demystify math and lay a solid foundation for future mathematics coursework.
If your school offers discrete math, you are in luck! I have experience tutoring several students in discrete math, and it is one of the more lively topics of mathematics. Discrete math is grounded in real-world problems, which makes it relevant and fun. I can show you examples related to your interests (biology, business, puzzles, etc.) as we explore this fascinating subject.
Math is my favorite subject to tutor, because there are so many ways to teach it! I like to relate math to whatever topic interests you (sports, shopping, games, business) and explain concepts in multiple ways until we find what works for you.
I have experience tutoring probability and statistics at the high school and college levels. I can provide examples that are explained at your level so that you can understand what your teacher and textbook are trying to say. I can get you up to speed so that you can understand your problem sets and pass your exams.
My approach to study skills involves identifying goals, motivation, and strategies for making study sessions effective. No one wants to sit at a desk re-reading notes for hours, especially when it doesn’t give stellar results. Studying science isn’t the same as studying French, so why do we take the same approach? Let’s work together to find strategies that will produce results. I will help you set meaningful, measurable goals so that you can see your progress.
