About Jacob

Hello,

I am 25 years old and working in my first job as a Process Development Engineer. I have always enjoyed learning about math and science, along with how those subjects relate to the human body. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science degree in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and a Master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. I would like to share some of my specialties with students who are interested in excelling in similar topics. For the last two years, I have volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Twin Cities, and found it very rewarding to work with children. I have an excellent relationship with my 18-year-old brother, who I have helped with classes over the last two years. I am looking to continue this in a setting which is closer to where I currently live. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I received a score of 35 on my ACT Math portion in high school. I have a very good understanding of the time management skills which are a big part of succeeding on the test, and are often overlooked. I also have a good understanding of the material, and experience in tutoring this subject.

Algebra 1

I have tutored two students through their algebra 1 class, and both saw improvement. Showing a student how a problem that is asked in a textbook can be applied to a real life situation always helps grab their attention, and they are likely to retain the information better when this can be done.

Bodybuilding

I have been in athletics since I was in kindergarten, including wrestling and football. Through high school I was on a strict weightlifting program in the offseason. I have taken classes in sports fitness, and weightlifting. I am proficient with multiple lifts, including specific lifts for each major muscle group.

Fitness

I workout 3 to 4 days a week, including weightlifting, cardio, and total body health. I focus on eating a healthy balance of food, and eating certain food groups in moderation. I have learned through numerous gym and fitness classes tips on staying healthy, and being active.

Football

I was a 3 year letter winner for River Falls High School varsity football. I played the game from 6th grade to 12 grade, and was a referee for flag football all throughout high school. I am more in touch with the defensive side of the ball, as I lead our conference in tackles my senior year. I watch football regularly, and understand the concepts that make teams successful

Geometry

This is one of my favorite math subjects. I use my knowledge of geometry when doing construction projects with my dad, and am effective at using real life problems to help kids understand the subject. I find that when students can relate to a problem, they are much more likely to actually learn the material.

Physics

I excelled in high school physics and decided to pursue the subject in college. I received a bachelors of science in Physics form the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. I am familiar with the subject material, and understand it well.
