College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN (Chemistry)
New Mexico Tech (Master's)
I have over five years of experience tutoring science and math to college and high school students. I have tutored at The College of St. Catherine, Albuquerque Technical Vocational Institute, The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, and Socorro High School. I have tutored Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, Geometry, Algebra, and Finite Math.
At The College of St. Catherine, I started as a Respiratory Therapy Major. Then I decided that I loved science so much, I transferred to the St. Paul Campus and became a Chemistry Major. While attending St. Catherine's, I received The Polymer Education Award for Organic Chemistry and was inducted into The Honor Society for Women in Chemistry, Iota Sigma Pi. Then, I decided to enter graduate school a year early. I earned a Master of Science Degree in Geochemistry from The New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, New Mexico. As a graduate student, I developed thesis research to examine the adsorption of crude oil components onto mineral surfaces for The New Mexico Petroleum Recovery Research Center. As a student intern,I performed materials synthesis, ceramic processing, and inorganic synthesis at Sandia National Laboratory. In my professional life, I have over ten years experience as a chemist with the Federal Government analyzing pesticides for the FDA and the USDA. Susan was very helpful to my son in learning Chemistry. His grade dramatically increased while Susan was working with him.
Susan walked through each problem and coached my daughter through the session checking to make sure she understood each step and could eventually complete it on her own. They completed my daughter's entire worksheet in the time they were together. I was very impressed with Susan's easy going, confident approach to algebra and would highly recommend her to other parents looking for a solid, patient tutor. Susan was also very timely in returning emails and even arrived for the lesson a little early! Susan is very thorough and professional.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am experienced at tutoring Algebra 1. I have helped students learn the Order of Operations, Factoring, Scientific Notation, Conversions, Ratios, Percentages, Fractions. I have tutored on how to solve equations and word problems.
Experienced at tutoring algebra 2. I have tutored how to simplify expressions. I have explained the slope intercept concept. I have shown how to graph linear equations and inequalities with one and two variables. I have discussed the concept of absolute value. I have tutored how to solve and graph absolute value inequalities. I have tutored how to solve word problems involving direct variables.
I have three years of experience tutoring Anatomy and Physiology I & II at the College of St. Catherine's Learning Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I am a Chemist by trade. It would be my pleasure to share my knowledge of chemistry with you. The college courses in chemistry I have completed are as follows: General Chemistry I & II, Organic Chemistry I & II, Quantitative Analysis, Environmental Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Principles of Geochemistry, Isotope Geochemistry, and Advanced Instrumental Methods.
My experience tutoring grade school mathematics includes a year as a MathCorps tutor working with 4th and 5th grade students. Currently, I am a substitute teacher at a local charter school working with K-12 students.
