Native speakers are better language teachers only at the advanced level. For beginning - intermediate level, a teacher who has learned a foreign language is better than a native speaker. Aside from living in China for 3 years and Russia for 1 year, I have lived in Minnesota all my life. I learned Russian primarily at the University of Minnesota and I learned Chinese at Chongqing Normal University in China. I have passed a Chinese language proficiency test called the HSK at level 5 (level 6 is the highest). At this level, I would be allowed to enter a university in China.
I have 4 years of experience teaching English - 1 year at a university in Russia, and 3 years at a private language training center in China. In Russia my teaching experiences consist only of classroom lecturing, but in China many of my classes were 1 on 1. I currently work as a Chinese Teacher at University Language Center in Minneapolis; I teach immersion Chinese (little or no English) for young children. I am capable of teaching all aspects of Chinese and Russian - reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Native speakers are better language teachers only at the advanced level. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
