Barbara V is doing great with my son. She found out how to get him excited about learning vocab and the importance related to reading and writing skills. She has used different ways of teaching - bouncing a ball, playing catch to stimulate his "other senses" and free his thinking. He is a quick learner and she keeps him moving. He doesn't have tests until this fall so I am unable to comment on how much he will go up. I will keep readers posted.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught College study skills, writing, and literature at several local colleges.
I am good at teaching students how to read passages and discern the meaning using learned strategies, so the student is not faced staring at a paragraph not having any idea how to respond.
If your student decides to complete the writing portion of the application, I talk with her to determine a topic she is passionate about, and then work with her through the writing and review process.
Last year I worked with a student who improved her ACT score significantly after our tutoring sessions. She got into the college of her choice and also received a scholarship.
I have experience teaching and tutoring students with ADD/ADHD.
Students with ADD/ADHD have learning challenges, and no two people are the same. It’s important to begin by evaluating each person’s individual needs and strengths. Then I develop individualized strategies that will help students with ADD/ADHD focus and stay on task so they may effectively. For example, because students with ADD/ADHD are often easily distracted, I find a calm, quiet place where we can work together. I work with the student to set goals for each lesson. I am clear and concise when I am giving them information. I help them stay organized in their work. And I provide them with lots of praise and positive feedback. These strategies can help students succeed.
The most important attributes I bring to students with ADD/ADHD are creativity, patience, and a positive attitude.
I have 8 years' experience helping students prepare for the ACT and SAT tests. I also have extensive experience assisting students with college applications and essays. I have worked with students on their college choices, helping them to identify what is most important to them in a college experience and what schools might be a good match for them.
I have experience teaching public speaking at the college level as part of a college success skills class. I work with students on the preparation of their content as well as on their public speaking skills and style. I have found that the biggest barrier is usually fear, so once students get past that, they can successfully become effective public speakers.
