About Elizabeth

Hello! My name is Liz, and I am licensed to teach both K-12 English as a Second Language and Spanish. I have a Master's in Teaching ESL and a certificate in Copyediting as well. I spent eight years teaching English Learners in the classroom (primarily middle and high school), and I have two years of experience private tutoring in reading, English, and Spanish to students ranging in age from preschool to high school. In addition, I have spent nearly two years teaching English online to both children and adults.

My education and experience have prepared me well to help students as they learn language, work through writing and grammar issues, and improve their reading, vocabulary, and speaking skills. I also have ample experience helping students with homework in various subjects.

As a tutor, I provide high quality instruction in a relaxed, yet efficient manner. My goal is to make learning positive, productive, relevant, and fun. Helping students to gain the skills they need to succeed in school and life is incredibly rewarding to me, and I am more than willing to work hard to help you reach your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am licensed to teach K-12 ESL and Spanish, but I also enjoy working with other subjects that elementary students may need to practice. I have worked with elementary students as a tutor for two years, during summer school, in a community education Spanish program, during one of my eight years of ESL teaching, and on several occasions as a substitute teacher. I have enjoyed hanging out with my nieces and nephews and have the kind of warm personality that young people seem to find approachable. I certainly make learning at the elementary level engaging and fun, yet productive.

English

I have eight years of classroom experience teaching English as a Second Language, which entailed working with various aspects of English, including vocabulary, writing, grammar, reading, and literature. I have a Master's degree in Teaching ESL, for which I studied extensively various aspects of English. I also earned a specialized certificate in copyediting through the University of California, San Diego - Extension, so my writing and grammar skills are especially well-honed.

ESL/ESOL

I am licensed to teach K-12 ESL, and I have been working with English Learners for more than a decade. I taught ESL in the classroom for eight years, tutored for two years, and taught online for nearly two years. I hold a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language from St. Cloud State University. Helping students of all ages to gain the English skills they need to succeed is a passion of mine, and I believe I am capable of providing high quality English instruction in a tutoring setting.

Grammar

I have a Master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language and more than a decade of experience teaching and tutoring ESL, which has entailed working extensively with grammar. I have also earned a specialized certificate in Copyediting through the University of California, San Diego - Extension, which has helped me to hone my grammar skills even more. I truly enjoy working with grammar and helping others to understand it better.

Proofreading

I hold a specialized certificate in Copyediting from the University of California, San Diego - Extension, and I spent a short time copyediting for writers through an online company. This experience, in addition to my time teaching and tutoring ESL, has honed my skills in editing and proofreading. I enjoy helping students to become more independent in proofreading and editing their work by giving them ample guided practice, as well as strategies for finding and correcting errors in their own writing.

Public Speaking

As an ESL teacher and tutor, I have worked with my students on several speech assignments. From outlining and drafting a speech to using effective body language, I have worked with students to prepare themselves well for speaking in front of others. I find it especially rewarding to help students overcome nerves and use strategies to successfully deliver an engaging, well-prepared speech.

Reading

I have had the pleasure of working with students on reading in several different contexts. I have helped beginning readers with basic phonics and word skills; I have helped struggling readers find books at their level that interest them; and I have used classic and contemporary novels and short stories to engage classes in discussion and learning about themes, literary elements, and strategies for reading comprehension. I am an avid reader myself, and helping to give students the motivation and tools they need to enjoy reading is extremely rewarding for me.

Spanish

I have always had great interest in the Spanish language, leading me to earn a Bachelor's degree in Spanish with a minor in linguistics. I spent my entire junior year of college abroad, studying at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas (Center of Modern Languages) at the University of Granada, Spain. I lived with a host family and gained great insight into what it takes to truly learn a language. Although most of my teaching experience is in ESL, I have continued to use Spanish to communicate with families and students, and I have never lost my passion for using and teaching the language.

Study Skills

As an ESL teacher and tutor, a key component in my curriculum has been study skills. I worked with my students on how to study, how to organize their work, how to find and use academic resources--ultimately, how to be a successful student. A number of my students came to me with little to no formal schooling; teaching them the basics of thriving in an academic setting was a challenging, yet rewarding experience. I believe I have a lot to offer students as they strive to become the best students they can be.

TOEFL

I have a Master's in teaching ESL and more than a decade of experience teaching or tutoring the four modalities of English (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). I enjoy helping students find and implement strategies to study for exams, and I could provide a positive and rigorous environment in which to prepare for the TOEFL.

Vocabulary

Vocabulary is one of my favorite subjects to teach. I enjoy helping students find ways to connect words to their own lives or background knowledge in order to truly understand new words. My goal is to help students incorporate words into their working vocabularies--not just memorize them for a test. In my experience as a teacher and tutor, I have worked hard to help students acquire vocabulary in meaningful--and often fun--ways.

Writing

Writing has always been one of my favorite subjects to both learn and teach. In my graduate program in Teaching ESL, I became the assistant director of the writing center at St. Cloud State University, active in both tutoring and assisting the director in ongoing staff development and organization of the tutoring program. That experience sparked my interest in the writing process and helping writers to become more effective as well as independent. By engaging students in conversations about their writing and helping them identify and correct patterns of error, I aim to help writers not only improve a certain piece of writing but also improve their writing skills long-term. My copyediting education and experience, though brief, have helped me to understand even better what goes into great writing and how to help writers elevate and polish their work.
