About Shanna

In order to reach goals we must often try, then try again and then maybe try differently. Our school endeavors teach us how to do just that before we enter the workplace and the rest of life. For that reason, it is important that we gain as much from our education as possible.

Being diagnosed with cancer at the age of 7 and losing my leg after a year of chemotherapy taught me those things. I was in the hospital, keeping up with my classmates, and facing real life challenges which showed me the importance of varying learning styles to best comprehend and apply material. I went on to spend the years since then (17 of them!) helping inpatient students with cancer and other illness with their homework at all ages and levels.

I graduated in the highest level classes in high school while carrying on a professional speaking career nationwide. AP Calculus, AP Writing and Literature, and Physics filled my senior year and I then graduated with a 4.0 GPA. I went on the following year to Winona State University where I double majored in Business Administration and Management of Information Systems, graduated in 3.5 years at the top of the MIS department, and with honors in both subjects.

My father is a business owner, so I grew up working alongside him and my mom who worked for 30 years in finance. In 2007, our family founded an organization which services the needs of families facing childhood cancer. I am a full time volunteer and program coordinator there today as well as a professional consultant and speaker. I have worked with business moguls from around the world and have learned that intelligence is nothing if it cannot be shared.

I greatly enjoy getting to know students and their families. I can tutor (and love to tutor) in a wide variety of subjects. My schedule is flexible as I am self-employed predominantly and I discuss with new customers flexibility in pricing. I am open to meeting wherever is most comfortable and convenient for your student, and working with whoever else is involved in their education to provide the best experience for him or her.

If you think that I may be of help to you, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Best,
Shanna

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I took the ACT in the fall of my junior year of high school. At the time I scored a 28 overall, with Reading and English being my strongest subjects.

I have always been an excellent test taker and really enjoy seeing my students succeed. What I think is most important when facing standardized tests is really understanding how the knowledge of the material applies to the flow of the test.

As you and I work together we'll identify the areas we can strengthen so that you can reach your highest potential!

Adobe Flash

I majored in Management of Information Systems at an accredited university where we used the full Adobe suite in most classes. I am willing and able to work with you to find the best solutions to your educational needs in the software.

Business

In 2011 I graduated from an AACSB-Accredited business school in 3.5 years with a double major in Business Administration and Management of Information Systems. I grew up the daughter of a business-owner and worked many years as a part of his company leadership. In 2007, I founded my own not-for-profit organization, which serves the needs of families with childhood cancer. It is thriving today, serving nearly 300 families annually. I won 9 national awards in 2008 for philanthropy in business, and am an invitation-only attendee to the Forbes Under 30 Summit for 2015 - a gathering of the world's most respected young business leaders and entrepreneurs. Business is everywhere, and understanding it can lead to great success in whatever venture one chooses to pursue! I look forward to working with you.

College Counseling

When starting college, I created a detailed document including all of my course options and when they were offered, connecting them to prerequisites needed to complete them. Doing this allowed me to know exactly what to register for at what time, and I was then able to take courses which applied to both majors and general credit on a number of occasions.

All-in-all, I was able to finish a double major in 3.5 years with honors. Additionally, I have a lot of essay writing experience as I went to school on full ride scholarship after winning 9 national awards during my senior year of high school.

I would love to help you have the most successful college plan possible!

Proofreading

I was that student in college who had adults asking me to proofread their work papers. I love it - in a totally normal-it's-something-I'm-good-at way. ;)

Public Speaking

I began my career as a professional speaker at the age of 7. In the nearly 20 years since then, I have shared stages with celebrities and first ladies, and a myriad of wonderfully inspirational people. I speak regularly at youth leadership conferences, service organizations, and executive gatherings for companies of every size. Speaking is one of my most favorite things to do in the world and I'd love to help you increase your skills so that you can share your insights with others!

Reading

As a college graduate with a double major in Business Administration and Management of Information Systems, it is clear that I understand the value of excellent reading skills. We all come from varying backgrounds and strengths, and it would be my joy to help your student succeed in their own path!

Statistics

Years of statistics classes in college as well as many hours tutoring statistics with other students.

What a Great Person and Tutor

I had been stumped all week on Elasticity of demand and also the math. Shanna figured it out right away that I needed tutoring in both areas and that helped me so much. I would recommend Shanna to any students that need help in the math area as well as in economics. I plan to enlist Shanna's tutoring skills throughout the time I work to earn my PhD.
