About Robin

I have been tutoring math for the past 12 years. I have had a variety of students, but my main focus is middle and high school math students. In addition, I prepare students for all parts of ACT and SAT Exams, and tutor English and Chemistry.

My aim is to keep the child up to date in homework and in understanding of the topics being covered in class. I like to see the child the night before the test so we have the best possible outcome.

I like the individual approach of tutoring, as I aim to build the child's confidence and give them some mastery in the subject.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am a retired Psychiatrist from Australia. My primary interest in psychiatry was children experiencing difficulties.

In the US, I have worked with the homeschool community, which tends to have a different set of children who don't fit in to mainstream education settings. As such I have worked directly with children who have ADD/ ADHD, or who are depressed or having difficulties with adjustment to a new town.

I have tutored in the public education realm for more than 10 years. These students come to me for a variety of subjects, but all of them do better in a quiet one-on-one setting where the focus is on their needs alone.

I am often involved with the IEP of the children, and have met many of the teachers that the child has at school. My aim is to become part of the network of support that surrounds the child. I am a strong advocate for the child and the family who works so hard.

Algebra 2

I have been tutoring math in the Rochester and surrounding area for over ten years. I love tutoring math, however I also understand that most of my students find math a hardship. I try to keep the session as interesting as possible, and I give a lot of positive feedback. I am flexible in my hours so that we can arrange times just before tests.
My students find that math isn't as hard as they thought, and we practice until the skills are fluent.

Aspergers

I am a retired Psychiatrist from Australia. My primary interest in psychiatry was children experiencing difficulties.

As such I have worked directly with children who have Aspergers, ADD/ ADHD, or who are depressed or having difficulties with adjustment to a new town.

Special Needs

I gained my degree in psychiatry in Australia before moving to the US 24 years ago. I do not practice as a physician in this country, but my training gives me a strong background in children with special needs. My recent experience is tutoring a high school student with special needs who required hospitalization during the school year. In addition I have tutored a child with ADHD, and I have had a long tutoring association with a student who was in the deaf/hard of hearing category.

Study Skills

I am a retired psychiatrist from Australia. I have been in the US for 20 years, and in that time, I have homeschooled my three children, and tutored many others, in math, science, English, and the Social Sciences. I have been an educational advocate for my students, and have attended the IEP meetings to plan the best course of action.

Study Skills is, of course, a very important part of education. The first step is to have a list of homework and to make sure it is done and turned in on time. I like to see the student's calendar so I can check for that. If there is a problem with getting the information down in writing, I am happy to interface with either the parent or teacher to have all the information.

I tend to use this hands on approach rather than standing back and watching the student fail, or struggle. I do however, acknowledge their work towards the goal. Rewarding good effort is so much more effective than punishing the results of poor study skills.
