I am a semi-retired teacher desiring to continue working with students to help them with their learning. I have 25 years experience teaching mostly at the elementary level as a Learning Disabilities teacher. I was a primary classroom teacher for three years. I have worked mostly with small groups or individually with students from a variety of special education disability areas in grades K-6.

I am practiced at developing teaching objectives to meet each student's individual needs. I have helped students improve in the areas of reading, written expression, math, and readiness skills. For struggling readers I use a multi-sensory phonetic approach that is systematic and sequential. I instruct students to improve reading fluency and increase comprehension of fiction and non-fiction reading materials. My teaching approach begins with determining a student's strengths and skill levels to target areas needing developing or improvement. I use a multi-sensory method and a variety of materials and manipulatives to enhance and motivate learning. I can help students at any ability level to improve their academic achievement.

I enjoy getting to know my students and their interests. It is very rewarding for me and my students when they master new skills. I use informal skill checks to inform students and parents of progress. My belief is that all children can be successful learners.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a current teaching license in Elementary Education 1-6 from the State of Minnesota and a current teaching license in Learning Disabilities K-12 from the State of Minnesota. I also have 25+ years experience teaching in the St. Paul Public Schools as a Learning Disabilities teacher and 3 years of classroom teaching at the elementary level. I enjoy working with students and approach each child individually. I monitor each child's learning, and make individual adjustments, when needed for students to obtain understanding and mastery of skills. I help students to participate in the learning in their classrooms with support from their teachers.
Phonics,

Phonics

I have taught beginning readers over the past 25 years using a phonics approach. I have attended several trainings including; Orton-Gillingham, Design for Decoding, and the Sonday method. I have acquired a variety of materials to help students practice skills from letter recognition to multi-syllable word recognition. Students enjoy doing word sorts and playing games to reinforce the skills they are learning. They practice reading and writing sounds in words. They apply decoding skills and word patterns in larger words and learn to recognize syllable types in longer words.
Reading,

Reading

I have many years experience teaching children to read. I have worked with children who are at very beginning levels of reading to more experienced readers who need help with comprehension and other reading skills. I am able identify the students skill strengths and weaknesses so that instruction is individually designed for each student. I have experience using the Sonday Reading Program that is structured and individuality paced.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

Many of the students I have worked with have needed help with basic school success skills as well as study skills. Students have needed help with making sure they have basic supplies and can follow classroom routines. Some have needed a folder system to keep track of assignments and/or homework assignments. Students need help prioritizing information and understanding the themes or main ideas in what they are studying. Most students need direct instruction to develop the skills needed to get information from non-fiction text. Older students have needed structure, such as using index cards and a graphic organizer, for research and written assignments.

Special Needs

ADHD,

ADHD

As a special education teacher I have had several trainings over the years for teaching ADHD and ADD students. I receive current information through subscriptions to organizations and publications for ADHD/ADD issues, such as Attitudes magazine, CEC, and PACER. I have had many years experience working with students with ADHD/ADD. I have been part of the assessment teams for many evaluations for children with a diagnosis of ADHD/ADD to determine if they qualify for special education services. These evaluations document how the students' ADHD/ADD difficulties affect their classroom performance. With collaboration of parents and teachers I have written special education plans (IEPs) for these students to give them services to support them at school. These plans contain services with individualized goals and objectives to help the students be more successful at school. The plans also include needed adaptations and accomodations to help the students more successfully meet classroom expectations and to develop strategies to promote their academic success and improvement.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I have a certification in the area of learning disabilities and 23 years experience working with learning disabled students which includes students with dyslexia type difficulties. Dyslexia can affect a student's ability to read and write. These students benefit from direct instruction in word recognition and decoding skills. My approach for teaching phonetic or decoding skills is systematic and sequential. Some have difficulty organizing ideas for writing. Some of my students have been helped by teaching them to use graphic organizers and paragraph frames. My instructional approach is multi-sensory using; visual, tactile, kinesthetic, and auditory senses for learning.
