I have over 20 years of tutoring experience in all phases of English literature, grammar, and composition. I can tutor all grade levels with a strong emphasis on English grammar. I have had many success stories in preparing high school students for the reading comprehension and grammar portions of the ACT and SAT. I also have 20 years experience in tutoring Latin I, Latin II, and advanced Latin, including Virgil. My background in Latin has honed my expertise in English grammar, because Latin teaches English grammar better than English teaches English. I have an easy-going and enthusiastic approach. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a degree in Latin from the University of Michigan. I have found that my background in the logic and structure of Latin has helped me to teach students English grammar and vocabulary. For example, pronouns are the most difficult part of speech for most students to understand in English because their form is dependent on their usage in a given sentence. (Emily sees him; not Emily sees he). I have tutored middle school and high school students in reading comprehension, composition, grammar, and the verbal sections of the ACT and SAT tests.
Since I have tutored ACT English grammar and Latin grammar for over 15 years, I feel that I am qualified to tutor this subject. My Latin background has honed my skills in English grammar, since Latin teaches English grammar far better than English grammar teaches English grammar. I usually begin with a review of the parts of speech, then parts of a sentence. Then I progress to phrases and clauses. Pronouns are the most difficult part of speech, because it is the only one that changes depending on how it is used in the sentence. A verb review is essential because half of English verbs are irregular.
I have a B.A. degree in Classical Studies (Latin & Greek with a minor in English literature) from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I love the logic of Latin and have enjoyed tutoring and teaching students of all levels for the past 20 years. I firmly believe that understanding Latin will help students greatly improve their comprehension in English grammar, other foreign languages, and the verbal portions of the ACT and SAT. I am familiar with most of the Latin textbooks currently used, including the Ecce Romani Series, Cambridge Series, and the Latin for Reading program,
One highlight of my teaching experience includes a course I taught in the Introduction to Latin for the Upward Bound program at the University of Minnesota. I was amazed at how interested the students became in ancient Greek and Roman history, the antics of the gods and goddesses, and words and phrases from Latin that we still use today, such as carpe diem, terra firma, and vice versa.
I constantly remind all my Latin students of both the logic and symmetry of Latin in grammar, but also the usefulness of recognizing new words because of their knowledge of Latin roots. Latina vivit!
I have worked in proofreading (it is one word) for over twenty years on a professional level. I have proofread for publishing companies, and I have also worked as a freelance proofreader. I have tutored students in English composition for over ten years. I am currently teaching English Literature and Composition for the Upward Bound Program at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, Minnesota.
I have a solid background in tutoring ACT and SAT reading, grammar, and writing. I am well grounded in English grammar because my college degree is in Latin, which gives me a solid foundation in usage and vocabulary. I have organized the grammar into the 8 points of grammar that are most often tested on standardized tests.
For over 20 years, I have enjoyed helping students improve their writing and grammar skills. Correct grammar and clear writing are effective in building confidence at any age level. I usually start with a review of the parts of speech and how this knowledge helps in putting together clear, logical sentences.
I have many years of experience helping students write ACT and SAT essays, college applications, reports, and essays in a variety of subject matters. Unity, coherence, and emphasis are the most important points in writing anything from a sentence or paragraph to an entire essay or report. I am a stickler for good grammar and in rooting out weak, redundant sentences to help the student achieve clarity in writing.
