University of Wisconsin Madison (English)
Hamline University (Master's)
Hi! I graduated with a MA in TESOL (Teacher English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Hamline this last winter, and I have a graduate-level certificate in TEFL. I graduated from University of Wisconsin Madison in 2009 as an English and lit major. I have 4 years experience teaching abroad (Uganda and Laos) where I worked with elementary and high school students. While in Laos, I taught 4th grade for one year and 5th grade for one year, and I also taught academic writing to young adults. Although much of my experience has been with children as a teacher and tutor, my more current professional and academic focus is teaching adults. I currently coordinate an evening school for adult immigrants and refugees where I support teachers, help with curriculum writing, and test students. My specialties are in academic English (writing, reading, speaking, comprehension), although I feel comfortable working with adult English language learners at all levels and needs.
I love tutoring as you meet the student where they are. As a teacher, I usually favor a highly-interactive, communicative approach, but as a tutor, I understand that not all students are the same, and I'm happy to do the research and make the time to craft excellent lesson plans that match the needs.
I'm excited to meet students, whether children or adults! My available hours currently are weekday mornings, up until 12pm or so, and sometimes weekends. Please reach out to me if you have any questions! Hi! Ilse was very helpful and patient with me. She helped me with narrowing down my topic and coming up with research questions.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I majored with honors in English and specialized in creative writing.
I have a TEFL Certificate and taught EFL for four years abroad and ESL for one year in the states.
I received honors in my English Literature major and remain an avid reader to this day.
I minored in creative writing in university. I have two years experience teaching and tutoring academic writing in university level.
