About Steve

I scored a 522 (131 Chemical/Physical, 130 CARS, 131 Biology/Biochemistry, 130 Pyschology/Sociology) on the MCAT exam, and have extensive experience tutoring and teaching the MCAT for the past three years. I have deep classroom teaching experience working for the major test prep companies (Princeton Review and Kaplan), and have also conducted private tutoring for both companies. I also have lengthy experience working for Next Step Test Prep, tutoring the MCAT exam to students both local and remote (using Skype and a virtual whiteboard). Finally, I have in the last year branched out to conducting private tutoring on my own. In total, I have nearly 2,500 hours of experience either teaching or tutoring the MCAT to future doctors, and it has become a great joy of mine!

Students are always asking me for the "secret sauce" needed to score highly on the MCAT, and it's actually not that complicated. First, we need to make sure that you have a study plan designed for your schedule and your needs, which may mean focusing on, for example, general chemistry and biochemistry if they are your weak points, and it also means ensuring you have enough time to truly be ready for the exam. Second, we need to ensure that you have a strategy as you take the exam and are comfortable with the exam; that means having a reasonably strict strategy as it relates to your timing on the exam, and knowing where to focus to optimize your bang (points) for the buck (time). Third, we will guarantee that you have a solid footing in terms of the content. Clearly, if you don't know the fundamental principles, concepts and equations for the exam, it will be exceedingly difficult for you to excel; this is where an experienced tutor and instructor of MCAT-specific content comes in to play to test your content weaknesses and ensure that you do not have any glaring gaps in your comprehension of the material. Fourth, and perhaps most importantly, is sufficient practice. Practice may not make you actually perfect, but it's essential to raising your MCAT score. I do not advise my students to actually take the MCAT until they hit their goal score range on their last three practice exams. I can help you navigate the complicated array of practice materials that are available to you online (full-length exams, section banks, question packs), and I also have a plethora of material that I can provide.

Further, I have helped many of my students not just succeed on the MCAT exam, but carefully craft their medical school applications and prepare for the interview process. I am happy to offer my services in reviewing application essays and conducting mock interviews (both the traditional interviews and the multiple mini interview format that is becoming more common at medical schools, including the University of Minnesota).

I graduated from the University of Michigan where I majored in integrated sciences. I also hold a master's degree in engineering, and am currently pursuing my MD at the University of Minnesota, having taken the USMLE Step 1 boards exam and scored a 249. I also have extensive experience tutoring the Step 1 exam – having now tutored over a dozen MD and DO students for the Step 1 exam – and am happy to take on new students needing assistance in Step 1 prep.

I believe that a physician must feel a calling to help people, and I similarly apply this to my work as a tutor. I am extremely passionate about, and take great pride in, helping people get over the hump and fulfill their dream of becoming a doctor. It's incredibly rewarding to help a student take, for example, a previous MCAT score of 487 and raise it to a 514 on test day, or an initial Step 1 practice exam score of 183 and raise it to 239 on test day. I am driven to help each of my students achieve such excellence! I also have a track record of consistently helping my students attain such scores on the MCAT and the USMLE Step 1 exam. I consider myself equal parts tutor (which means teaching content and strategy) and coach (which means keeping my students on task and up-to-date, and helping them through any rough patches). I look forward to helping you reach your goal MCAT or Step 1 score on test day!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

The Best In MCAT Prep

Often times one learns a concept and thinks that one has mastered that topic. However, Steve is truly gifted in exposing one to look at that same concept from a different and meaningful point of view. Consequently, his thought process has made my understanding of those same concepts useful and impactful as I try to crack the MCAT!!
