Early Childhood Education has become the new Kindergarten to many schools and districts. The state is starting to recognize the importance of early education in Minnesota counties and communities. Preschool is more prevalent in public schools now more than ever before. Owning pre-kindergarten academic skills has become integral in closing achievement gaps and more importantly, setting children up with an attitude of success as they begin their education.
I have been an Early Childhood Educator for 16 years. I graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Early Childhood Education and Child Psychology. Early Childhood is particularly special breed of education. Children ages 3-5 (more specifically 0-8) can be on significantly different learning levels in several different areas. This is the time when their brains are changing so fast, and at different rates and domains than their peers, that teachers MUST be on top of where each and every one their students is developmentally, what helps them learn most effectively, retain their knowledge over time, and most importantly, foster a sense of success and security within each student.
I have taught in private play-based preschools, inclusive ASD preschool, ECFE, and started a public school IB (International Baccalaureate) preschool. I have worked in depth with Reading Corps to offer an environment where every minute offers an opportunity to learn. In the last 16 years, I have obtained my favorite techniques to educate young children, but my toolbox is always full of alternatives. After all, they are all learning in their own unique way.
I like to do what I am good at. I am a confident teacher. You like to do what you are good at. If you are doing something you are good at, it's not work. It's not a chore. It's a treat. You want to learn more. You want to explore new ways to challenge yourself in your area of expertise. THIS is my teaching philosophy. Kids who start kindergarten feeling "good at school" succeed. And enjoy it. And want to learn. It is so much more than teaching A,B,C's and 1,2,3's. It's about learning to love books. Learning to love learning. Learning to ask questions. Even learning that everyone makes mistakes and mistakes are what we need to learn. It's about feeling successful and confident. THAT is what makes a child ready for kindergarten, and every grade after that.
I use Repeated Read Alouds to teach literacy, vocabulary, phonics, and basic book mechanics. It's not just simply reading one book over and over again, it's diving deep into the book and getting engulfed by the story, the characters, the alliteration, rhyming, site words, etc. It's acting it out, playing "I Spy" with the set of special vocabulary words. It's disecting the book instead of opening it, reading it, and putting it away when we're finished.
My techniques that teach literacy, writing, alliteration, letter identification, and rhyming to preschoolers, can be used on all children learning to read or needing extra practice with reading or writing. Even though my specialty is Early Childhood, I am confident in my techniques to help kindergarteners through second graders with their articulation, fluency, and vocabulary.
Phonics is so much more than memorization. It's not holding up a flashcard and asking what sound it makes. How many English words can actually be sounded out exactly like it's spelled? Not as many as you think. Learning phonics is a tool and technique, not the end-all/be-all behind learning to read. In order to learn phonics as a technique, it takes reading stories, playing games, writing words, etc.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
