About Tom

After working many years in the technical fields, I decided to begin a new career as a language teacher. This seems to be a natural for me as I love teaching and love languages. I have studied Japanese formally and informally for 40 years and am now working on Somali. I am a recent U of M graduate in Linguistics with a minor in teaching ESL. I have tutored Somali adults and children for four years in ESL classroom settings.

I am very flexible in my approach to teaching. I could use prepared textbooks at your level or I could tailor a learning approach to your exact needs. I could teach English basics or more advanced levels in grammar, conversation or writing. Japanese instruction is also available.

I have a recent University of Minnesota major in Linguistics and a minor degree with a certificate in Teaching ESL with four years of classroom ESL tutoring of children and adults.

Please consider me as your choice to meet your needs in becoming proficient in English to better your life for the future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I went to Central Baptist Theological Seminary from 1979 through 1984. I did not graduate but have been involved in teaching in the churches I have attended ever since. I am currently involved in writing books on theological topics and will be working on getting them published. My approach is conservative and evangelical. I have experience in teaching the Bible to both adults and children.

ESL/ESOL

BA in Linguistics from the University of MN
TESOL certification
Currently employed by 51 Talk English and Cedar Riverside Adult Education Collaborative

Writing

I am a lifelong writer. I have two books nearly ready for publication. I specialize in the use of detailed outlines that are amazingly helpful in the writing process. I am an ESL teacher so I am very good with English grammar and sentence structure.
