About Emily

Tutoring writing combines my two biggest passions; I love to write and I love to help people. I was a literature major in my undergraduate degree and a technical writer/editor in my graduate degree. As a master's student, I was a full-time writing and ESL tutor. In this role, I learned how to meet students' individual needs and often developed a long-term rapport with students which enabled me to see their writing grow over time.

As a tutor, I love to help others understand their writing and communication skills--what they already know--and give them additional tips and tricks for how to continue growing as a writer. As a fellow student, I learned a great deal more about writing, in general, from helping others with their writing. Not only did I feel I helped students with their writing needs, but students helped me think about writing, communication and learning styles, MS Word, writing styles/genres/formats, and their needs for a compassionate listener and assistant. Tutoring writing was an enriching experience that I would like to continue, as I am proud of my skills and passion in helping others succeed in communicating effectively.

I am an expert in academic/business/professional writing and grammar; am proficient in many different research methods; and excel greatly at communicating with individuals from different backgrounds, including people from different cultures, ethnic backgrounds, genders, and ability-levels. I also tutor writing from all different subjects areas, including composition, literature, film, political science, history, lab reports, technical/business/professional writing (resumes, cover letters, proposals, etc.), social sciences, and so on. I am perfectly happy discussing subject-matter with students, if I am confident on the subject, to try to help them understand certain areas that they may want to examine further through research.

I would love to help you understand your strengths and any things I would suggest that might help your writing grow. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and learning from you, as well!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

Through my first year of tutoring, I worked a recurring student who reported that she had dyslexia, which I had been trained thoroughly on in my CRLA training before I began tutoring professionally. Through my experiences with this student, I understand that students with dyslexia perform poorly when forced to rely on textual communication, exclusively. Therefore, I learned that this student excelled when she heard her own writing read aloud by another person, and that aside from her inability to learn well via text she was a very good student. I adapted to what the student reported worked best and helped her pass her MTLE exam through my work with her.

Film

In my undergraduate degree, I minored in film studies. While I was not offered film production in my program, I took 20 credits on film analysis, theory, and criticism. In this minor, I focused primarily on world film, such as the films of Iran, Senegal, and South America. As a tutor, I also specialized in tutoring writing from film studies courses so gained even more experience on discussing, analyzing, and writing about films through tutoring.

Special Needs

I worked with 4 individuals with disabilities for 6 years in the group home setting. In this time, I actively worked to teach and maintain programs with the individuals by learning their individual needs, learning styles, and personality types. Through this enriching experience, I learned a great deal about having patience and tolerance with all individuals, especially those with special needs who may need a more sympathetic ear in order to excel independently. Because of my experience in this role, I specialized in tutoring individuals with learning disabilities.
