About Bridget

I am an experienced teacher of English as a second or foreign language. I am also a certified IELTS examiner for the British Council. I have taught at the university and college level in both South Korea and China. I mainly taught speaking, reading, and writing courses to college students who ranged from beginner to advanced. I also taught at a training center in China and assisted working adult students on improving their listening and speaking skills. In the US I have worked with foreign exchange students and immigrants and refugees helping them to improve their academic and work-readiness skills. In South Korea and China I also worked with youth in primary school, middle school, and high school. In my most recent teaching position in China, I taught high school students English Literature, US History, and TOEFL preparation. In China and the US I have worked one-on-one with students preparing to take the IELTS or TOEFL exams. My first year in China I prepared my students for the government CET-4 and CET-6 exams with many students successfully passing. My teaching focus is to use a communicative approach, especially when working with students whose aim is to improve their speaking skills. I have excellent ability in helping students negotiate meaning within dialogues and discussions. I focus on helping the students overcome shyness, develop intelligibility, and improve accuracy. I encourage my students to express themselves and feel comfortable speaking and interacting in English. For my reading students, I aim to inspire them to practice their skills by reading useful and interesting reading material--material that they can relate to or feel passionate about. I ask my students to take margin notes, ask questions, do follow up research, relate it to their personal experience, and summarize the material. When working with writing students, I encourage them to read essays from expert writers and use them as models for improvement. I also train them in using various styles and formatting in their writing. I also work to improve my students listening skills by using language that is suitable to their current level of understanding and then expanding on that knowledge by introducing new words and more complex grammatical structures. With my assistance, my students simultaneously improve their speaking and listening skills through both naturally occurring conversation and elicited speech. I am eager to help beginning through advanced students in developing all of their English language skills. I sincerely wish that all of my students work toward their goals and become successful in accomplishing their dreams.

In my spare time, I love to go bike riding (even in the winter time!), swimming, watch movies and TV shows on Netflix, read the news on the internet, visit with friends at restaurants or coffee shops, attend live music performances around the Cities, take walks around the Minneapolis lakes, and host parties with family and friends. I am an avid reader of politics, world events, social issues, history, and health and nutrition. I come from a big family and enjoy spending time with my two adult sons and their families. I also enjoy visiting my elderly mom along with my family and my many brothers and sisters, nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have English language education and experience with IELTS and TOEFL preparation.

IELTS

I have been a certified IELTS examiner since April, 2013. I am certified to rate the speaking and writing portions of the test. I began as an IELTS examiner in Guangzhou, China. Today I am doing exams at the ELS Language Services center in St. Paul, MN on the campus of the University of St. Thomas.

TOEFL

I have worked extensively with high school aged students preparing them for the TOEFL exam. The majority of the students I have worked with earned high scores on their TOEFL exam and were able to attend universities or colleges in the US and Australia. My teaching focus is to prepare students for the exam by increasing their overall fluency while helping them strategize ways to earn higher scores on all sections of the test.
