I received my BA in history from Davidson College, my MA from The University of North Carolina, and am currently pursuing a PhD. My research subjects range from a master's thesis on a 19th century legal history of slavery and the legal culture of marriage in the antebellum south to my current PhD topic exploring links between music fusion and cultural identity for American Jews in the 20th century. Simply put, I'm nuts for history and want to help you reach your goals, whether they be improved grades, writing a stellar research paper, or pinpointing specific historical themes or topics that just aren't gelling.

I have two seasons of in-the-field experience excavating 17th and 18th century sites at one of the nation's leading living history museums--Colonial Williamsburg. During my time there, I not only excavated, but gained a thorough understanding of cataloging techniques and a great deal of experience interpreting archaeological sites and issues to public tours and teaching visitors how archaeology and history professions work in tandem.

One of the most rewarding aspects of academic historical training is my time in the classroom. I have served as a teaching assistant in U.S. survey classes throughout my graduate career, where I've focused on working with students in small group and individual settings and mentored students through their first forays into academic research and writing. In particular, my classes focus on exploring interdisciplinary areas through primary sources to provide a tangible experience weaving historical events and issues together in a more textured and layered fashion. A large amount of my one-on-one time was spent working with students on writing techniques, research strategies, and creating strong, persuasive historical analysis and thesis development.

Whether you want to dig deeper into history, sharpen your persuasive and analytical writing skills, or work on historical research techniques and strategies, I would love the opportunity to help you reach your goals! Please don't hesitate to say hello and lets chat about your interests--I'm here to help!

With years of graduate-level writing and a reputation for merging creative flair with nuanced, insightful, and analytically sophisticated writing, I have enjoyed helping students in the Twin Cities improve their writing in myriad ways. Whether you struggle with basic essay structure and flow, are searching for a more sophisticated tone, or want to develop your analytical writing or research skills, I love helping students improve their writing and overcome their particular challenges. I am particularly adept with humanities topics and have significant experience helping high school and college level English and history students.

History

American History,

American History

From archaeology to oral history to genealogy, I approach history from an interdisciplinary perspective designed to make learning exciting and engaging, not simply an exercise in connecting the dots. My experiences mirror my teaching style; I've spent two years working on archaeological sites at Colonial Williamsburg, two years conducting oral history interviews for the University of North Carolina's Southern Oral History Program, and 15 years of advanced genealogical research, in additional to traditional graduate training and teaching. I received my BA in history from Davidson College, my MA in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and am at the ABD (All But Dissertation) stage of the PhD.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

I have an MA in history from UNC Chapel Hill and am currently working on my PhD. I have worked as a teaching assistant in U.S. survey classes. In particular, my classes focused on exploring interdisciplinary areas--a critical aspect of social studies--to weave historical events and social issues together in a more textured and layered fashion. Besides my history credentials, I have a background in anthropology and, specifically, archaeology, and have two seasons of experience in this at Colonial Williamsburg history museum, as well as anthropology coursework at the College of William and Mary. My graduate focus has been on social and political issues and how different ways of looking at American society, from popular culture to music to law to politics all interact and inform historical events. My work at the Southern Oral History Program as an interviewer is yet another aspect of this interdisciplinary approach of social studies.

Archaeology

Besides completing an archaeological field school at the College of William and Mary, I have two seasons of in-the-field experience with Colonial Williamsburg--one of the United States' premiere living history museums. I have excavated at various 18th century Virginia sites, from Ravenscroft to Williamsburg's colonial coffeehouse. From the art of excavation to writing field reports to cataloging and maintaining artifacts, I have direct experience in all aspects of the archaeological process.

Awesome tutoring experience

What a great tutor. We have used lots of tutors and Daphne is right up there with the best. This was our first session with Daphne. She knows the subject matter (US History) very well and was patient with our daughter who is not crazy about history. She provided immediate written feedback that was extremely helpful as we move forward with tutoring. We are already booking her for future sessions and are very lucky to have found someone who can explain the material so well.
