I began tutoring when I was in College and while studying engineering after-school and weekend tutoring program have continued throughout 4 years in university. After graduation I keep tutoring on weekends. My belief is that a strong foundation is an absolute must to properly understand math. Therefore, when tutoring a new student, I first look for the points at which he or she started getting confused. This is especially true for trigonometry and precalculus; it is very difficult for a student to fully understand these subjects without a good understanding of pre-algebra and algebra.
Students from mainly algebra I, algebra II, and precalculus would gather to receive help on homework and studying for tests. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
