About Kathryn

Hello! I am a native of Minnesota where I attended Minnetonka High School, Minneapolis Community and Technical College, and the University of Minnesota, including the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. I have worked in various educational settings as a College Prep and ESL teacher, adviser, and program coordinator, but my passion is for tutoring. The relationship between tutor and learner is engaging, stimulating, and positive.

I have a bachelor's degree in English, graduating summa cum laude, and a master's degree in pubic policy: 7 years of full-time college, with a 3.92 G.P.A. (Transcripts available upon request.)

I have a passion for teaching English -- literature, writing, and reading comprehension. I have taught English to teenagers and adults from the U.S. and many other countries. My experience teaching English language learners (ESL) has helped me become a better, more sensitive English tutor for all my students, regardless of their first language. I tailor my tutoring style to each student's learning style, but patience and support are always part of our relationship.

I look forward to hearing your learning goals, so we can make a plan for the greatest possible success in your education and professional life! I am confident you will be happy with my dedication to your education goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

ACT English is quite straightforward and I enjoy helping young folks become comfortable with this important test. I have tutored in ACT English and enjoyed watching the faces of my students as they improve their practice test scores!

English

I have a Bachelor's degree in English (honors program) from the University of Minnesota (summa cum laude), with classes in literacy, literature, and reading. I have a master's degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs. I love helping students discover their love of English!

ESL/ESOL

During college, I began my long career, both voluntary and paid, as an ESL/ELL tutor. I loved it right from the start. My first job after graduate school was teaching a classroom of teenagers from varies countries around the world. Later I taught adults English in the evening as part of a community education program. Now I am a full-time tutor and ESL is my favorite subject to teach. I find adults learning English are the most engaged and curious students -- great qualities that make the student-tutor relationship a success. I have met many wonderful ESL students through WyzAnt!

Literature

Although I have many subjects I enjoy, literature has always ranked #1. I have a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Minnesota (summa cum laude and honors program) where I studied literature that crosses cultures and other diverse angles to the main theme of literature. I have a master's degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Proofreading

As an on-line teacher of College Prep at a 2-year college, a lot of what I did was proofread and suggest edits to students. I also proofread people's resumes in my position as an employment counselor for a nonprofit. Proofreading is one aspect of what a teacher does when reviewing and correcting student papers. I have a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Minnesota (summa cum laude and in the honors program), with classes in literacy, language, and reading. I have a master's degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Reading

I have taught reading to teenagers and adults as a College Prep instructor at a community college and for years as an ESL teacher/tutor.

Vocabulary

I have taught vocabulary building to high school and adult students, both English Language Learners as well as students preparing to take their GED exam or their college entrance exams. I use the Latin and Greek roots to build English vocabulary. I have a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Minnesota (summa cum laude and in the honors program), with classes in literacy, language, and reading. I have a master's degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.

Writing

I have taught writing to students aged 13 - 65 in various educational settings and privately. These students were pre-GED to post-graduate school level writers. Everyone can benefit from improving their written communication skills! I have a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Minnesota (summa cum laude) and wrote a senior thesis for the Honors Program there. I had coursework and training in English as a Second language writing as well. I have a master's degree from the Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
