About Megan

I'm a working journalist with experience at several major-metropolitan newspapers who has knowledge of all kinds of writing, from AP Style to your basic essay. I can help you improve your writing skills or help you edit your work with careful proofreading. I have worked as a copy editor as well, so I have developed micro- and macro-editing skills, meaning I can find your grammar mistakes and help you focus your writing on whatever point you are trying to convey.

I've always enjoyed helping others improve their work, from editing at newspapers to mentoring interns/aspiring journalists. Writing can be difficult, but it's something everyone does, and everyone can do well. I will do all I can to help ensure you're writing is the best it can be!

I am skilled in Writing, English, Grammar, Proofreading, Copy Editing, Vocabulary, Spelling, AP Style, and Journalism.

Don't hesitate to contact me for more information about me, how I can help you improve your writing and my thoughts on the Oxford comma!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I had a perfect score on my ACT Reading section when I took it. I am a professional journalist and copy editor, who writes and edits stories on a daily basis. Critical reading skills and the ability to recognize grammar errors have become second nature to me.

English

I am a professional journalist who has written for several major metropolitan newspapers. I have also copy edited at several newspapers, meaning I am able to recognize where improvements can be made in others' writing - from grammar to the overall "big picture."

ESL/ESOL

I am proficient in both French and Spanish, having studied the language throughout college. As a language student myself, I understand how difficult it can be to communicate in a second language. But I have found the more repetition and practice in the language, from speaking it to listening to it to reading it to writing it, the easier it is to master. And as a professional journalist, it is my job to know correct English grammar, which is something I can teach to ESL/ESOL students.

Grammar

Compound-complex sentences, appositives, restrictive v. non-restrictive clauses: these concepts might sound foreign, but they are second nature to me. As a professional journalist, I write and edit stories every day. And while many of us write without really considering the grammar, I've been trained to understand each part of a sentence when crafting one. I have tutored students in these fundamentals with great success. It just takes looking at the small parts instead of the big picture.

Literature

I read stories every day. As a professional journalist, I read news articles and long-form features as well as novels and other fiction. Understanding literature is all about being able to breakdown the story using reading comprehension skills. And I am sure I can teach students how to not only understand literature of all eras and genres but also enjoy it!

Proofreading

I have copy edited at several newspapers, which involved micro-editing for grammar/spelling/fact checking as well as macro-editing for the "big picture," as in what the point of the story was and how to best convey that point without losing focus.

Public Speaking

I am a journalist who must interview people on a daily basis, from your average person on the street to high-profile athletes. I was also active in theater for many years, which was all about speaking in front of big crowds. I also participated in forensics, or the speech team, in high school, winning several conference championships and advancing to the state competition.

SAT Reading

I scored a perfect score on my ACT Reading section when I took it. I am a professional journalist and copy editor who writes and edits stories on a daily basis. I have developed critical reading skills and the ability recognize grammar errors, both of which are now second nature to me.

Writing

I am a professional journalist and copy editor who writes and edits stories on a daily basis. Because of this experience, I know how to tell a story that conveys the important facts while also being interesting and entertaining. And with my editing, I know how to recognize grammar errors as well as look at the "big picture" of the story and make sure the writing supports that.
