About Amanda

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little bit about me!

I recently moved to Minneapolis to pursue a career in education. I am currently serving as a literacy tutor with Minnesota Reading Corps, and this fall I will join Minneapolis Public Schools as an associate educator.

In my current role, I assess kindergarten through third grade students to determine if they are reading at or below grade level. I use this assessment, as well as state testing data and teacher input, to determine which students will benefit from 1:1 tutoring sessions. I use evidence based interventions that improve phonemic and phonetic awareness, fluency, and reading comprehension. Increasing a student's literacy skills directly impacts their academic performance and encourages them to become an independent learner. I love helping students gain confidence in their ability to read, write, and understand text.

My goals as a tutor are to help students of all ages develop the tools necessary for academic and personal achievement. In order to achieve these goals, I prefer to work in an environment that is safe and comfortable for both the student and myself. This can be in a library, cafe, or the student's home. My hours and monetary rate are listed on my profile, but I can be flexible depending on the circumstance.

Please don't hesitate to ask me any questions. I want this to be an open, pleasant, and fun experience for everyone involved. I can't wait to hear from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Reading

I am currently serving with Minnesota Reading Corps, through which I was trained to be an effective, data driven literacy tutor. I work 1:1 with students in the areas of phonemic and phonological awareness, fluency, and reading comprehension. Using tailored interventions and regular tutoring schedules, students work towards a grade level reading proficiency.
