I am a current math education student and have just completed my first semester of classes. I am very skilled in algebra, but am currently enrolled in precalculus, so the longer I am a tutor with WyzAnt, the more areas of math I will add to my repertoire. My class schedule will have one math class at each point in the year (Spring, Summer, and Fall), so I will be constantly engaged in my own math learning and increasing my capacity to do more math.
I currently have been working as an AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) tutor with the Minneapolis Public Schools for this last year, and have been working in education for the last 10 years. I have a lot of experience doing small group and one-on-one math help. What I love about tutoring is being able to give direct, uninhibited help and explanations of math concepts that are unclear to students, and I generally love the feeling of having my explanation of something lead to another person's increased knowledge and/or understanding. I love knowledge and helping others acquire it, so tutoring is a direct way of helping someone else acquire knowledge.
When I understand a concept or idea, I am incredibly gifted at explaining that concept or idea to others. Whereas some people try one avenue to make something make sense to another person and give up if they are unsuccessful, I am able to either find another avenue to make something make sense or discover what does not make sense to that person and correct the problem in acquiring or retaining the concept or idea in question. I am also a very patient person, so I do not get frustrated by another's frustration, and am very good at putting people at ease with their own felt frustrations or fears.
As my headline says, if I can do it, you will with my help! If you are interested in getting help with Prealgebra or Algebra 1 (Soon to be MORE subjects!), contact me and I will work with you to schedule some time to work with you and make math easier for you so you can either do better on homework, tests, and quizzes, or simply have more confidence in your own ability to do math! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
