Wake Forest University (Chemistry)
Chemistry is occurring around us all of the time, and I love being able to learn more about the way the world works at the most basic level. It is a difficult combination of math and art where everything can be calculated to be true, but it is beautiful in that it explains the very nature of life! This reality has driven me to study Chemistry and apply it in multiple fields over the last 8 years.
I completed a B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry degree with honors from one of the top 25 undergraduate universities in the country, Wake Forest University. Through my studies, I performed 3 years of Biochemistry research, studying the use of Click-Chemistry in determining a method to bio-mark aberrant kinase function. Upon graduating, I took a position at the University of Minnesota in the Cancer Research Center. In that position, I worked on a project linking biomarkers of tobacco use to different ethnicity's susceptibility to lung cancer. My work was published in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention: "Variation in Levels of the Lung Carcinogen NNAL and Its Glucuronides in the Urine of Cigarette Smokers from Five Ethnic Groups with Differing Risks for Lung Cancer." Most recently, I've worked as an Environmental Specialist at Target Corporate.
I have tutored Chemistry for the last four years, and enjoy it thoroughly. My goal in my tutoring sessions is to equip my students with tools that allow them to master the difficult concepts presented in Chemistry.
I want to be pivotal in the education of the students I tutor, so I will not bill a lesson if you are not satisfied. Also, I am flexible with scheduling, but have a 36-hours cancellation policy. I prefer meeting in a coffee shop or public space, but will consider other locations on a case by case basis.
I look forward to being able to help you not only understand, but master all of your educational ambitions! One hour of tutoring will be charged if there is a late cancellation. For students living 30 or more minutes away, at least a 1.5 hour tutoring session will be required.
Betsie helped me after the very first lesson! She was patient and really clear and things just clicked for me!! I highly recommend Betsie.
Betsie tutored my daughter a few times for a college Chemistry class taken during a fast paced summer session. I'm convinced Betsie helped my daughter pass this class with her knowledge about Chemistry and her efficiency in covering a wide variety of concepts in a short amount of time. Betsie is a great tutor and was so awesome to work with as she is very accommodating in scheduling sessions that worked for our schedule and was quick to return emails. We are very happy with the results and highly recommend Betsie as a tutor. And, her friendliness and patience was icing on the cake. Thanks so much Betsie!
Betsie did a great job of helping my daughter understand her college chemistry! I highly recommend her for her teaching abilities and inspiring presence!
Betsie is tutoring my daughter in AP Chemistry. She is accommodating with time, has a positive attitude and is very knowledgeable. My daughter always walks away from the lessons with a much better understanding of the concepts than she gets from school or the textbook. Betsie can translate difficult concepts into easy to understand ideas.
My daughter has a had a few tutoring sessions in high school chemistry with Betsie. We are very thankful to have found her and plan on continued sessions through the year. Betsie is very knowledgeable in the units my daughter has been and is currently working on. Beyond that she is a thoughtful and compassionate and my daughter enjoys working with her.
In just one session, my daughter went from feeling lost to feeling prepared for an upcoming test. We look forward to regularly scheduled sessions with Betsie!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.S. in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry from Wake Forest University.
