About Martin

I'm a Teach For America alum with lots of unique experiences packed into the past 24 years. I was a teacher for the past three years at STRIVE Prep in Denver. I've championed project based learning, implemented Common Core standards for network-wide assessments, and led my students to achieve an average of 89% median growth percentile on the state test which translates to about two years of learning in one school year. I finished my MA in Education from UC-Denver in 2015.

I graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2012. In addition to completing my BA in English, I interned for a US Senator (and former SNL writer) as well as two 500 companies. I ran the student government office as Chief of Staff to the student body president and coordinated recruitment for Interfraternity Council. I also volunteered for an innovative charter school in South Minneapolis called the Southside Family School and kept a floor full of college kids functioning as a Resident Advisor. After college, I moved to Colorado for my Teach For America commitment.

In my spare time, I do freelance content marketing and copy writing for start-ups as well as working on a variety of design and communication related projects. I also play ultimate frisbee, build bikes from abandoned frames back up to functional machines, and enjoy time in the mountains hiking or snowboarding.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I did very well on the reading section of the ACT (33). Since then I majored in English at the University of Minnesota and got accepted to Teach For America to teaching history, reading, and writing in Denver.

Common Core

I've taught common core aligned ELA classes for the past two years at STRIVE Preparatory schools. I oversaw common core alignment for network assessments to ensure that our tests reflected common core standards. I also did curriculum design work for a new elementary school to ensure that the curriculum reflected all common core standards.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've taught 6th grade for the past three years. In addition to this experience, I have volunteered with a range of elementary aged students, taught third grade summer school, and I've helped design elementary curriculum.

Praxis

I've taken the PRAXIS before. I also volunteer as a transition leader for Teach For America where I help people prepare to take the PRAXIS test. I've helped several incoming corps members prepare to take their tests.

Public Speaking

In high school, I participated in forensics (competitive public speaking). Now, as a teacher, I help teach speaking and listening skills to my students. I've also taken several public speaking and communication classes in college.

Social Studies

I'm licensed by the state of Colorado as a social studies teacher. I passed the social studies Praxis test with ease. I've taught social studies for the last three years. My students earned the highest score on the network wide social studies pre and post test.

Study Skills

In college, I helped new members of my fraternity with study and time management skills. Now, teaching study skills to middle schoolers is part of my daily routine. I've found success in preparing students for ACT aligned tests and I've had a lot of practice teaching students who have never studied before how to study.

Volleyball

I played club and varsity volleyball in high school and recreational volleyball with friends. I helped coach the STRIVE volleyball team last year. I also worked closely with the team and practiced with them this year.
