My love of tutoring English to speakers of other languages comes from a love of relationships. The more ability individuals have to communicate, the more potential is actualized and relationships are formed. As an foreign exchange student myself, I learned the power of language in people's ability to connect and thrive.
In addition to earning an undergraduate degree in Social Work, I earned a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate in order to meet a felt need of learning English. Since earning the certificate I have had many years of experience tutoring English language learners. I spent 3 months teaching English to university students in Bangkok, Thailand, and for the last 5 years have tutored adult Somali immigrants in Minneapolis.
I believe that the goal of language is communication. So, while I strive to guide students in grammatical precision of English, I also encourage students to create language for themselves and to become more confident in their ability to use it in daily life. I am also able to tutor students in the use of English in their other academic programs.
I strive to assist students in achieving competency in the practical use of the English language for their lives. For this reason, I create lessons for students at the level they are and for the needs they have and I challenge students to use English as their own language in order to grow in their competency. Also, while I am flexible with students , I require a 12 hour cancellation notice, but will work with the student to reschedule.
Please contact me for further questions. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing where learning English will take you! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
