I had always loved to write and read (both classical and modern literature), but I had never embarked upon the task of obtaining a college degree. That changed while in my forties when I became a student at the University of Minnesota, majoring in journalism. I still don't quite have my BA (expected graduation date of May 2016), but some of my work on politics and entertainment has already been published in City Pages and the Murphy News Service; it's quite exciting.
Additionally, I have along the way had work-study postions on campus as a tutor, where I was able to share my experience and learn from others as they went about successfully accompishing the various writing requirements of their classes. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
