About Ellen

Hello! My name is Ellen and I am a teacher, a proofreader/reviewer, and a lover of learning. I developed a passion for education at a young age, which prompted me to work for and earn a bachelor's degree in English Literature and Print Journalism, and a master's degree in English Studies. I have six years of teaching and tutoring experience, and my specialties are proofreading or reviewing student writing, and teaching literature and writing skills, including composition, grammar, syntax, mechanics, and style and format. I have worked with high school and college students, and I currently work with doctoral students as a Writing Instructor at a university writing center.

My teaching philosophy evolves as my experiences and my students evolve, but I continue to stand by the idea that writing skills are essential to one's success in many facets of life. I strive to prepare my students to write for school assignments, but also to write within the workplace. My goal is for my students to succeed, not only in the educational environment, but also in their jobs or extracurricular activities, all of which likely involve the utilization of writing skills.

In order to help my students progress, I do my best to motivate and challenge them by using activities that address the issues with which they struggle. I also create lesson plans for each tutoring session based on the student's individual needs. For my students who need my help proofreading or reviewing their written work, I address problematic as well as positive patterns throughout their papers that they can work to improve with me as their tutor, or on their own. My hope is to help my students address and remedy their writing challenges, but also to help them improve the writing skills they already possess.

I very much look forward to hearing from you and helping you or your child with their writing or proofreading/reviewing needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

The English portion of the ACT involves reading comprehension and knowledge of writing basics such as grammar, syntax, and paragraph structure. I have had the pleasure of teaching both reading and writing skills to students in grade school, to students in graduate school over the course of my academic and professional careers. I also took the ACT myself, though that was quite a few years back!

English

The term "English" is often used as a blanket term in academia to represent subjects such as "grammar," "composition," "literature," and even "reading." I have experience teaching each of these subjects, but perhaps my most applicable experience to this category is my tutoring experience in in both academic skills centers and multicultural centers, my four semesters as a teacher for a college composition course, and my two years as a Writing Instructor at a university writing center. In these positions, I wrote lesson plans, created curriculum, delivered lectures, reviewed course papers, and assigned and graded homework. In these positions I had the opportunity to work with students one-on-one,in the classroom setting, and in virtual environments. Working with students to help them improve their "English" skills, in whatever sense the word "English" is being used, has been a thrill!

Grammar

In my current position as a Writing Instructor at an online university, I work with students from across the globe. In this position, I have the opportunity to work with both native English speakers, as well as English Language Learners, which is an experience that has allowed me to refine my knowledge of grammar and how to teach others to develop and refine their own grammar skills. Whether one struggles with the basics, such as subject-verb disagreements, or the advanced, such as anthropomorphism, I am here to help!

Literature

Teaching writing is such a thrill for me. Over the course of my college, graduate school, and professional careers, I accumulated six years of experience teaching writing. Working with students one-on-one as a writing teacher was one of my favorite parts of my job because it gave me the chance to specialize my teaching for each individual student's needs.

Proofreading

In my current position as an online Writing Instructor, I review student papers every day. In my reviews, I not only proofread for sentence-level errors, but I also help my students organize their ideas, create and maintain thesis statements, and format their papers per APA rules (I am also familiar with MLA style). Whether you would like a document proofread, or you would like me to review your work and provide you with educated suggestions for improvement, I'm here to help!

Reading

I have experience teaching elementary school-aged children basic reading skills, as well as experience teaching high school and college students critical reading skills. Because reading and writing skills are so connected, I often require my students to incorporate both reading and writing into their assignments. I encourage my students to practice these fundamental skills on a daily basis as away to help them develop as readers and writers.

Writing

Teaching writing is such a thrill for me. Over the course of my college and graduate school, and professional careers, I have accumulated six years of experience teaching writing. Currently, I teach writing skills to undergraduate and graduate students in the Writing Center at an online university. I love working with students one-on-one because it gives me the chance to specialize my teaching for each individual student's needs.
