About Barbara

I provide one-to one assistance in problem solving, following proofs, geometrical interpretation, and conceptual understanding. I have tutored courses in high school geometry and algebra, trigonometry, college algebra, finite math, pre-calculus, short calculus, single-variable calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, probability, applied statistics including data analysis and hypothesis testing using SAS and SPSS. I have assisted students with ACT, DAT, CLEP and AP preparation. I am strong in both pure and applied problems.

My past work experience includes work as an adjunct math instructor at the University of Minnesota, University of St. Thomas and Normandale Community College.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biostatistics

I have completed biostatistics courses at the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina. These courses included Statistical Computing (SAS and SPSS), Biometry I, and Demographic Methods. Courses at the University of NC included a calculus-based biostatistical course.

Differential Equations

As an undergraduate I took a number of courses in differential equations. I recently tutored a student in material on differential equations, both first order and second order. This would include linear differential equations, separable equations, and homogeneous and non-homogeneous linear differential equations.

Finite Math

I taught two sections of finite math at the University of St. Thomas in the fall of 2011.
The topics covered included linear functions, systems of linear equations, mathematics of finance, sets and counting and probability.
These topics were also included in another course I taught at the University of Minnesota, PreCalculus I. I also recently tutored a gruadate student on topics of systems of linear equations, and mathematics of finance.

Linear Algebra

I have completed two quarter-long upper division math courses in linear algebra with grades of A.
I have tutored the topic and was a paid paper-grader for the course. In addition to the under-graduate course work, I have taken graduate course work in linear models, which is based largely on linear algebra.

MTLE

I have an undergraduate degree in math and have taught college level math in Minnesota for 5 years. Some of the students that I have taught have been ones working on degrees in education. Successful completion of that course allowed these students to meet the math requirement for their degree. I have also tutored students preparing for the Minnesota Teaching Licensure Exam and am familiar with the geometry and algebra problems posed. I was able to assist students having difficulties with these questions.

SAS

I received my Master's of Statistics from North Carolina State University where SAS was developed.
All graduate students were required to carry out statistical analyses using SAS for volumes of homework for most of the courses. Recently I assisted a Ph.D. student with data management and statistical analysis of survey data as part of her thesis work. I am able to develop programs with SAS, but have more experience with data management and analysis.

Very patient and helpful

One of the best tutors I've had. She is great at helping me simplify problems in precalc. If you are looking for a precalculus tutor, Barbara is great choice!
